Marijuana and Skydiving. Good, bad, indifferent?

skydiving is enough of a buzz and it's legal

heck yah!!!

When I was in AFF, I over heard a potential tandem student on the ground sayin how cool skydiving looked, he couldn't wait to do it. Then he said - "I bet it would be awsome while rolling." I couldn't believe it!!
I asked him to please do a few jumps sober before considering adding anything. A few hours later, he thanked me... why add to the already almost uncontainable fun?

I've known some very experienced jumpers that will go after a few tokes or sips of alcohol. I'm exiting after them though! Def not something to condone, but honestly I'd swear some of them act more sober when doped up!

There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear.

I beieve it is irresponsible.

OK, so you believe it is irresponsible for you to jump stoned, thank you for that.

I also happen to believe that some skydivers are quite capable of jumping stoned.

Being capable and being responsible are two different things entirely. They are certainly less capable when they are stoned.

Yes, I would probably be more capable jumping with a beer buzz, than would a sober, 100-jump wonder. It would still be an irresponsible thing to do. While I may be able to meet some arbitrary minimum standard while buzzed, I (and anybody else, for that matter), would be less capable in that condition, and pretty fucking selfish too.

Duude,

its true weed and brew slow you down. I personally prefer some green window pane before the airtime.;) helps to put you ahead of the game man, you know you do before reality catches up to you. Plus the cutaway trails are really wild.:o

Hey sparky, I'm just wondering, with those 30 years of experience... How did you know those people were stoned... I mean, considering the fact that THC stays in the system for up to 30 days, they could have very easily been stone cold sober, yet test positive. Testing positive for THC proves nothing. Hell, eat a poppy seed bagel and you can test positive for opiates.

THC can be detected in urine for up to 30 days but only 4-8 hours in blood. Here is a site that explains how it affects a person.

Could you show me where someone ate a bagel and tested + for THC?

Ok, so thanks for the info there... hmm, says duration of action is 2-4 hours, detectable in blood 4-8 hours... so it still seems you could have a positive test on someone who is sober... As for the bagel, I said opiates, not THC. It doesn't matter, what I was getting at, and it seems that the Indiana Dpt. of Toxicology backs me up on this, is that even with a positive test, you really have no idea if the person was "stoned" at the time of the accident or not.

If they test + for THC now it is a good bet they were + 1 to 2 hours earlier when the accident happened. They don't back you up on anything.
Sorry I miss read, so could you show me where some tested + for anything after eating a bagel?

Well, you have to agree with me that it is possible, given a 4-6 hours difference in duration of action vs. positive testing that it is definitely possible that someone who tested positive was actually not high at the time of the accident. A good bet does not proof or "beyond a reasonable doubt" make. As for the poppy seeds and the positive test, see here. Sorry I couldn't find in governmental sources (too lazy) but this is a drug testing company admitting that eating the things will produce false positives.

I am trying to get an idea of how jumpers view marijuana and it's effects on the mind in regards to skydiving. Here are some hypothetical scenarios that might occur on a drop zone.

1. You, personally smoking some before you jump by yourself or with a group?

2. You straight, and jumping with others who have smoked a few minutes before the flight?

3. You straight and other jumpers in the plane have smoked prior to the flight but you're not jumping with them, just riding up with them?

4. Has anyone ever smoked before jumping, had a malfunction or something unusual/dangerous happen and went into brain lock and then thought about it after being on the ground?

5. How about if you knew the pilot smoked prior to take off and you knew he was a seasoned, safe type pilot?

6. Any other scenarios re marijuana and jumping that I can't think of that you would like to add?

Again, I'm trying to get a feel for the acceptance or rejection of marijuana and it's use around skydiving.

You can remain annoymous by just posting hypothetical answers and not incriminating yourself.

Thanks.

Skydiving is a drug of addiction (for those who can afford it)

Thanks for the information, that is the first I have heard of that happening. No it is not beer. In any case, if you test + you go to jail, remember it is illegal.:P

So was alcohol during the 1920s... Should I give a history lesson as to the reasons marijuana became illegal?

If someone is going to jump with impaired judgement, then I'd rather be elsewhere.

Just thinking its appropriate at all is, IMHO, poor judgement.

I would like to read about that. Considering that once upon a time, the Government once required farmers to devote 10% of their fields to growing hemp.

I think this is probably a good source for a bit of history concerning the criminalization of marijuana. I haven't read the entire thing but it seems to jive with what I saw on the history channel about how it was made illegal because of fears of lost jobs to mexicans (they smoked pot) and the work of the Hearst empire.

Just in case you haven't noticed, this is not the 20's. Alcohol is legal and pot is not. No shit, really.
I think we can skip the history lesson, but thanks for the offer. The issue is that the use of either one fucks you up. Its that simple. No more questions, class is over.

This forum Is pretty heavily one sided. I think its a big issue because people cannot define the grey areas in all of this. I question how many of you have actually jumped with someoen who is high and not even noticed. If they are real pot heads they might suprise you on how normal they look. Regaurdless of that, Why take extra risk's in a sport so dangerious? Beer light turns on... its all good. Pretty simple. I guess somepeople like extra risks, maybe it makes them feel as though they are closer to the edge. I wouldn't know, But thats my best guess. It might be more constructive to try and step in the shoes of the person you are arguing with and see how the view is. Open your mind, Im not saying change you opinion at all, just maybe try and step into that persons psyche.

=D

Peace

I think you'd prefer it in the 1920's, since it was more authoritarian then than now.

I guess being born in the 30's is a slight consolation for you.

Would you listen to yourself sparky?... er... I mean read yourself. Pot was outlawed due to lobbying from the pulp and paper industry in fear that hemp products would put them out.... *Not* because of it's effects on the human body.... which are *not* the same as alcohol. Anyone that says that Pot and Booze are the same is gravely mistaken... anyone who says they are "the same I'm my eyes", has their eyes shut.

The effects are not the same at all! Pot affects one person very differently then the next. Anyone that uses pot regularily will even tell you that one bag of pot affects very differently then the next and that is very true. The decision to jump or not to jump is up to the jumper... the decision to jump with that person or not is yours. Make your desicion wisely... that's that.

I do not condone toking right before a jump with the intent of being high for the jump. I, er, my friend will turn down a joint if he/she has an active day of jumping. However, it's a judgement call that must take place at manifest-time. I.E., if we're on wind-hold and I, er, my friend tokes, the the wind dies down and we can jump again, I, er, my friend will make the decision right then and there... am I, er is he burnt out?

Pot does not affect your ability to reason in the sense that you don't know you are impaired... in other words, the worst affect it will have on you skydiving-wise, is delayed reaction and sluggishness... if you are suffering from this, you will know you are suffering from this and should wisely decide not the jump.

Nick
