aeroflyer 0 #1 July 6, 2010 Is it true that you can't tell if the leg straps on a rig will fit before you pack the main and reserve in it? Right now the leg pads overlap about 1" when they're tightened... and there is about 13 inches of extra strap to tuck in.

A rig that fits perfectly with the main/reserve in it will seem 2-3 inches too long (MLW dimension) when both canopies are taken out. The MLW doesn't change of course but the container contours to your shoulders/back/butt all the better and results in a looser fit.

So I'm thinking the fit of the leg straps won't change.

So I'm thinking the fit of the leg straps won't change. But the hip junction moves with the "shortening" of the MLW when packed which usually affects the fit of the leg straps. (not sure if you were thinking of doing so, but... ) DO NOT shorten the leg straps prior to jumping the rig a couple times (obviously/preferably packed when jumped, at least until deployment time ) JWAlways remember that some clouds are harder than others... AllisonH 0 #6 July 8, 2010 When I sent my rig back to the factory after having it packed and jumping it a few times they did the modifications free - including reserve repack and shipping both directions.
riggerrob 558 #7 July 8, 2010 The better Master Riggers know how to replace leg pads without unpacking the reserve. Again, you cannot accurately measure leg pad fit without both main and reserve canopies packed into the rig. Wiser to not modify the leg pads until after you have a few jumps on it. Thanks for the clarification. I should have noted that I sent mine back for a comletely unrelated reason - was just pointing out that many manufacturers have quite good customer service and the OP shouldn't make a decision like this based on saving the cost of a repack. I have indeed had other more minor alterations done to my rig by a local rigger without unpacking the reserve.
