Casie Donates Blood for Skydiver...How About You?

Recommended Posts

Skydivers, this is big news. Casie, aka Porn Kitty, donated blood yesterday in the name of a fellow skydiver. Casie is afraid of needles so her bravery must be recognized!!
The voucher given her at the Blood and Tissue Center in Austin, Texas, will be used as credit for blood units to his 'account'. This skydiver is seriously ill, with a life threatening illness. An email plea went out yesterday from our dz S&TA to donate in his name.
If you are able to donate (I can't, don't weigh enough, but am in the National Marrow Registry), please PM me and I will help you find the blood and tissue center nearest you (USA) and will give you his name. You can then mail the voucher to me and I'll take responsibility to deliver it to him and/or his family.
If Casie, Chicken Little Porn Kitty, can do it, anyone can!!
CASIE, I'M HONORED TO BE YOUR FRIEND. THANK YOU FOR GIVING A TRUE GIFT FROM THE HEART.

For those of you, like me, who don't weigh enough to give blood, please consider becoming a typed potential marrow donor in the national database! Here's their website:

And thanks, Chad, for offering to donate blood today! YOU ROCK! :)

You can also be a marrow donor even if you have certain disqualifying conditions. I had hepatitis when I was 11, so I can't donate blood, but I can donate marrow if needed.

From the email...

JR said his rig is out of date and needed cleaning, he said it might be a little while before he jumps but he wants to be ready.
He has quite a way to go but I think if he stays in good spirits, we keep him in our thoughts and prayers that will help.

........
Send vibes! :)

Casie, Kudos to you!

TheAnvil cannot give blood for a few more years due to some area's I've travelled in....

Platelets are also really good to give at places like St. Judes and you can give platelets more often...

I have not been "allowed" to donate blood for many years due to some of my past and present travel locations....I even tried at the DZ about 6 months ago(ZHills had the Red Cross bus come out), but they told me the same thing. Supposedly I have to wait 6 to 18 months(depending on the country in question) before donating.

They won't let me donate blood (recent body piercing) but I am on the marrow registry and have been for seven years now. :)

I was thinking about donating until i read this, how long do you have to wait after a piercing to donate??

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

Hey everybody, honest question. I tried posting this on an old thread and didn't get a response b/c the thread was so outdated. But I'd really like to know:

IIRC, the FAA sez you can't fly for 72 hours after donating blood. Fewer red blood cells means less oxygen can get transported to the brain and so (theoretically at least) it'd be easier to get hypoxic. This, combined with the fact that I'm working out four to five days a week, has always had me saying no to blood donation.

My question is: has anyone ever had symptoms of hypoxia on a skydive that they felt they could attribute to donating blood recently before making the jump? I'm referring to "regular" altitude jumps, no high altitude, HALO kinda stuff.

Same question, different donation: what about donating/selling plasma? If you're keeping the RBCs, hypoxia should be less of a concern, right?

Nope. Shortest time from donation to jumps was about 24 hours, but no symptoms at 13,000 feet - at least on me. Since everyone's different this doesn't mean it's safe to do of course.

BTW I have gotten hypoxic pretty regularly on unusual jumps -

18,000 no oxygen a month ago
24,000 feet, off O2 for 2 minutes before exit
22,000 feet, off O2 for a minute, but a strenuous exit

Based on what other people in those dives experienced, I'm about average in my susceptibility to hypoxia.
