new study on cheating

Recommended Posts

Things have been a little dead around here lately.
Here's a fire we can toss some gas on.

This kind of lets the air out of the "only evil men" theory. Seems that stuff is just about the same.

Just how many married women have had sex with people who are not their husbands? It's hard to say for sure, because people lie to pollsters when they talk about sex, and studies vary wildly. (Men, not surprisingly, amplify their sexual experience, while women diminish it.) Couples therapists estimate that among their clientele, the number is close to 30 to 40 percent, compared with 50 percent of men, and the gap is almost certainly closing. In 1991, the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago asked married women if they'd ever had sex outside their marriage, and 10 percent said yes. When the same pollsters asked the same question in 2002, the "yes" responses rose to 15 percent, while the number of men stayed flat at about 22 percent. The best interpretation of the data: the cheating rate for women is approaching that of men, says Tom Smith, author of the NORC's reports on sexual behavior. When Michele Weiner-Davis, a marriage counselor and founder of the Divorce Busting Center in Woodstock, Ill., started practicing 20 years ago, just 10 percent of the infidelity she knew of was committed by women. Now, she believes, it's closer to 50 percent.

I heard about this on the radio. They said one of the reasons is that there are many more women in the workplace now as opposed to 20 years ago. More opportunities exist for her now besides the milkman..:P

Milkman? I'm not old enough to remember when milk was delivered. ;) (couldn't resist)

I think it is a lot of things.
1- Birth control pills. No pregnancy to complicate things.
2- The old relationship model has a flaw. Life isn't perfectly romantic forever and ever. The search for more playtime and less responsibility becomes too tempting.
3- The playtime person is always more attractive than the one that you get to keep.
4- There is no downside to cheating for women anymore. If she gets caught, so what?

Cheating has become a national pastime. Committment means nothing. Just look at the divorce rate. But then again, I am in the "don't get married" category. Been there, done that, probably won't do it again. We, as women, do have more opportunity for meeting the opposite sex than we did in the past. We are involved in the workplace, sports, extreme sports, etc. We can choose to have or not have children. We are not bound to our homes. This is what the last 20 to 30 years has done for us. So I expect those numbers will rise even higher. . .equaling the male numbers. . .or even exceeding them as women push the envelope even further.

I blame the view that society has on sex and marriage these days. It doesn't shock me about the women being more unfaithful because of it. Think of it this way, 20 years ago, if a girl had slept with more than 10 guys in her life, she was considered a slut. Nowadays, go to any college campus and look for a crowd of people at a party, guess who's gonna be the center of attention......the popular sorority girl who's showing her tits and planning on screwing a couple guys that night. It all boils down to the old saying...."You can't turn a hoe into a housewife". Girls that are used to going out and having good times like that as often as possible (which is the norm now) are not going to want to settle down and have a husband, kids, a house, a real job, etc.. Nowadays not a lot of these girls really plan on having a family, it just happens when they don't want it to, and their party streak ends abruptly. Even though they may love their kids with everything they have, the love needed for their husband isn't there (since it was an "accident" anyway). Ten years goes by, she gets bored, and the infidelity occurs.

As for guys, some men are just assholes, plain and simple.

So there ya go, the marriage world problems according to wrongway. B|

For the record, this is just my uneducated guess. I'm a young guy who has never been married. :P

Oh, and if anybody says it's because of gay marriage being legal, please take it to Speakers Corner and shut the fuck up. B|:D

30 years ago, there were financial and social consequences. Now there are actually financial incentives for women to get divorced.

I believe that women have always wanted to be more aggressive sexually, but society placed constraints on them. Now those constraints are gone.

One other factor. Women get offered sex a lot more than men. A woman offering sex to a married man is rarely as attractive as his wife. The woman is going to recieve offers from men who are more attractive than her husband.

As much as I love you, Bill, I'm going to have to disagree with you here. I have had very few occurences where men just walked up to me and offered me sex. I don't think I'm too hideous. Actually, the times I've kissed guys, I have usually been the one to initiate it because I don't get hit on all that much.

Exactly. Most women would not have admitted to being sexually aggressive then. Now it is the norm rather than the exception. I personally feel the freedom to be who I am without having to conform to certain "societal constraints" is infinitely better than what the past offered. But then again, I am single and not in a commited relationship.

I actually wonder how society will change.

A younger family member is very attractive, she is also an attorney. She dates whoever she wishes and had no financial reasons for dating anyone.

I doubt she will be married soon because it is "all about me". There is no compromise on any issue. No guy seems any more special than another.

Guys for the most part can offer any female sex and be percieved as macho whether the girl takes him up on the offer or not. A girl would be labeled as a slut for offering. Thus said a guy can be attached to a female and still easily play the field (yes, you guys do it so don't even try to say bull). Now that society has changed girls have more of an opportunity to do the same thing because they are exposed to much more than my parents generation. A girls will still be labeled a slut but she is at least having some fun now, and society is coming around slowly.

Although its been awhile since I've been at a frat party, I have to disagree with your analogy! Even though women do have more sexual freedom these days, and tend to stay single longer (racking up more partners) a "Hoe" is still a "Hoe". Girls who behave as you describe at a frat party, or girls with multiple sexual partners are still looked down upon and labeled as sluts, even by the guys who enjoy them! A guy who sleeps around is still considered by many to be a "stud"! That has not changed much in the past 20-30 years!

Very few times is still more than the zero times that happens to guys. :P You girls have no idea how easy it is for you. Most attractive or even moderately attractive women could have any guy she wanted just by walking up and offering it. Don't believe me? Walk up to any guy in a mall or out on the street and whisper in his ear "If you come with me now, I'm going to give you the best sex of your life", and see how many guys turn you down. I'm not saying that's right or that women should do this, but I'm just stating that they could on any given night if they wanted to.

Guys on the other hand, if we did that, we'd be slapped. Hard. :P

Thank God I don't need to deal with looking for dates anymore.....I think I've convinced mine that it's okay that she's dating a dork. B|:D

My dad always told me a guy can be a whore too that’s probably why I never cheated.

To say all these people are doing something that’s morally wrong so who cares if I do it is not right.
If you don't want to be in a committed relationship don't get in one it's that easy.

When people cheat they end up hurting alot of people.

I have quite a few guy friends that would turn that down. Actually, I think all of my guy friends would be scared off by some woman walking up and saying, "Hey, do you want to go have sex?" (She'd have to be insanely hot for that to work.)

Maybe it's because I hung out with frat guys while in college, but I saw them randomly get offered sex at a bar just as few times as I have! Also, there were (very) few times where I wanted to kiss a guy but got turned down. Also, there were plenty of guys that I've kissed who have came out and told me, "I'm not going to have sex with you." (Yes, I believed them since they were over at my place and left.)

So, as with everything, views on if men/women can get sex easier depends on one's experience. I saw many hot frat guys get offered sex.

...and society is coming around slowly.

Most guys pretty much expect that girls have had sexual experiences and they are ok with it. If it is just playtime, they are still ok.

However, when it moves into thinking about a relationship, a featured appearance on a "Girls Gone Wild" video does give you pause to think. ;)

I guess the question becomes, "For a woman, what is the definition of a relationship in the New Millenium?" It sounds like fidelity is out of the picture, what's left?

I once saw an interview with Marilyn Chambers (long-time successful porn star). She said she had never been unfaithful to her husband.
