ok, guy in the next office is having problems. his home page keeps defaulting to easy-search.biz and he has a lot of popups going on. i believe he has what is called a hijacker, but i don't know how to get rid of it. already tried adaware and spybot.

Tell him to go to www.download.com and search for a program called "Ad Aware". Download it, and run it.

Download a program called "Hijackthis" and it will show you all the browser settings and lets you change them.

Also run Spyware Blaster.

running adaware and spybot are just about the only ways to clean the computer... anothing thing you can do is boot into "safe-mode" and then try re-running the anti-spyware aps again... make sure they are updated before rebooting

also a virus scan is likely needed as well

there is a point sometimes when you just have to bite the bullet and reinstall the OS but spybot usually works very well for me.

The next level of repairs to the OS gets a bit more tricky and I don't recommend them for n00bs... you can try Start --> Run --> "msinfo32" then look under software environment --> Startup Programs and see what is loading at startup.

There are also about 5 locations in the registry where errant programs can load at startup from to fux0r your system up, but I think that would be beyond the scope of this post to address...

i asked if he downloads the updates and he said someone told him not to. i'm guessing that could be a problem. the man really needs to find some safe porn sites or just go back to a print subscription.

yes that is a serious problem... I update religiously, antiv scan weekly, and do spybot once in a while and NEVER have any problems

of course I don't use the www to find pr0n.. there are better places to get it

his computers sounds pretty much hosed, probably should just rebuild it, it will turn out better in the long run anyway, and make sure that "automatic updates" are turned on at least.

Did you download the latest version? I used it the other day to get rid of that same home page redirect on someone's pc here.

Actually, you'd be surprised.

Go take a look at www.adaware.com and www.adware.com

I was visiting a clients site last week who'd insisted that he'd run Ad-Aware. The minute I saw the receipt - he paid $45.00 for it, I knew he was hosed. he'd bought it at adware.com - and it infested is computer even worse.

Which is why I said to get the version from download.com. There are many programs that are spoofing Ad-Aware. Download.com is a good, trusted source, that only carries the legit spyware remover.

From memory:
Easysearch redirection is caused by ISTBar. (I would need to look it up to be sure) Ad-Aware and CWShredder should be able to remove this IF you reboot the machine into SAFE MODE. Simply reboot the machine and press F8 (assuming Windows XP here). You will get the boot option menu.

Even if this is not ISTbar (or a varient) you may want safe mood anyway so that all the crap is not running in memory while you are trying to kill it.

I would be vary of using HiJackThis because you can kill off part or your real settings if you do not know what your are deleting.

google "easy-search.biz", or ask some of those computer nerds that hang out at spyware forums... i've gotten rid of a few nasty critters by using this forum, they very helpful.

Unfortunately, that could get you into worse trouble. I ran into some malware a few weeks ago that not only reinstalled itself after you removed it, but they also filled the top search hits with their own pages advertising how to remove the malware. Guess what, not only did it not remove it, it gave me a new variant. I finally got rid of it after reading 5 or 6 different forums which not only clued me into the bogus sites, but also removal procedures

If you're gonna search the web for a particular problem, double check the info you're getting
