So unless the bar is moving a lot of it, it's not practical to sell by the glass. I wouldn't expect to see it anywhere but a wine bar, even here in lush land San Francisco. 2- how cheap is cheap? I find most CA sparklers too sweet, but Roederer Estate is an exception. Their Brut Rose runs around 20 or so. 3- if you find red wine oily (that's got to be a very small sampling of the vast types out there), you might not like Dom. I'm told that the half bottles are much more common in Europe. Would be nice. I now keep my empties and use them when I don't want to drink a whole bottle. livendive 8 #33 July 26, 2004 My favorite "value" sparklers are from Schramsberg. You should be able to find their low end bottle (Mirabelle) for around $13 or so. For sweet, you have GOT to try their cremant demi-sec. It's not too tough to find, nor is it that expensive (<$30 for sure). For a terrific flavor pairing, try it with some good crackers with cream cheese & jalapeno jelly on them. mmmmmmm Schramsberg also covers the traditional bases, with blanc de blanc (chardonnay), blanc de noir (pinot noir), and rose (blended chard/pinot) sparklers, As someone else mentioned, Veuve-Clicquot is a very good mid-priced label. They also make a non-vintage demi-sec that is somewhat better than the Schramsberg, but it's also more expensive. At the high-end, Veuve makes La Grande Dame, which is typically terrific, with a price to match. I don't think you'll find a sweet Cristal, and if you do, I'd suspect there's something wrong with it. skygal3 0 #37 July 27, 2004 So..my champagne story. Never had it til the ole wedding day. 8:30 in the morning, after our hot air balloon almost drowned us in the lake. Anyway, the fishermen on the catamaran have a good luck charm--something about drinking champagne on the way back to shore (I can't remember everything, it's been a stinkin year--anyway) so the catamaran is going back to shore, we're all getting loaded on champagne, it was great, just me and my new hubby, champagne in hand, watchin the mtns go by...*sigh* complementary bottle of champagne (windsor vineyards) for being married in their balloon and two glasses to go with with the hot air balloon etched on one side and the prayer on the other.
