Great Movies. (At least I like 'em.)

That's just because there wasn't anything dynamic about them for their time.

Ohhh, ya gotta be careful about that. Some movies that weren't exactly popular in their initial releases slowly grew to become classics.

For instance, "It's a Wonderful Life", #11 on the main list, wasn't really popluar until it became a Christmas classic on TV.

"The Wizard of Oz" didn't really do all that well at the box office nor did "Fantasia" and the 1962 version of "The Manchurian Candidate" basically sat on the shelf for 30 years where it was unseen by anyone because it bombed so badly during it's opening (well, there -is- a bit more to the story), yet today it's a classic and also in that list of the top 100 films of all time.

I concur, add Donnie Darko. Plus Garden State. Are we going for drama or any genre. The list could get long.

I disagree on Vanilla Sky. For one reason, in case you weren't aware, Vanilla Sky is a remake of a 1997 film from Spain, Open Your Eyes or Abre Los Ojos. Penélope Cruz also starred in the original as the same character, Sofia. The original was decent as a psychological thriller, but ultimately failed at its finale. So my question is, why make the same film, with almost all the same scenes.

Cineamatography, my friend.

Casino and Vanilla Sky are on my list as much for the way they were shot, as the way the story was told.

My list was in no way complete, just a few random thoughts from last night.

Have you seen the original?
I like Vanilla Sky, just thought the ending was a bit Deus Ex Machina, after all the thought induced early on.

I think Garden State is an incredible 'life is tough but worth it' movie. Zach Braff, the guy from Scrubs, wrote, directed, and starred in it. It leaves feeling that life is jacked up, but so much worth living, and that the journey is the point. As one character puts it "Good luck exploring the infinite abyss". Absolutely superb. For Braff's first picture, an incredible accomplishment. And Natalie Portman in her best role I think. Check it out sometime.

Others perhaps:
Eyes Wide Shut - raises some disturbing but present questions.
Donnie Darko - a really thought/discussion flick
Boondock Saints - philosophy and violence
Easy Rider - you just have to watch it
The Right Stuff - you got a stick of Beeman's?
Love actually - hilarious and touching
Fulltime Killer - japanese assassin flick
Memento
Blackhawk Down
The Salton Sea - perhaps Kilmer's best role
Miller's Crossing - coen bros.
Secondhand Lions - clean inspiration
Adaptation - twisty thriller
Amelie - great fun
Ghost World - Buscemi
Trees Lounge - Buscemi
Greenfingers - cute
Kevin Smith Series
Nine Queens
The shipping news
Wonder Boys

The list got a little long. ;) I picked only the unusual ones with 4 stars that I have seen. You get an idea what my netflix history looks like :)

Dazed and Confused

:D :D

"Behind every good man there is a woman, and that woman was Martha Washington man, and everyday George would come home, she would have a big fat bowl waiting for him, man when he came in the door, man she was a hip, hip, hip lady, man."

"George Washington was in a cult and the cult was into aliens, man."

"Did ya ever look at a dollar bill man? There’s some spooky shit goin’ on there. And it’s green too!"

"Got any weed, ...man? It’d be a lot...cooler if you...did..."

I loved that movie! :D

1) Vanilla Sky.

2) A Clockwork Orange.

3) Casino.

4) Apocalypse Now.

Anyone?

I'm more into directors than movies, so mine are,

1. David Lynch

2. Stanley Kubrick

3. Ken Russell

I'd also like to add that that fucking hack Tim Burton takes last place in any list, as the producer of the most unwatchable shite ever foisted upon the public. Just imagine what Edward Scissorhands would have been like if Lynch had gotten hold of it.

I read recently that some of the guy's classmates have sued him; it seems that he not only based it loosely on their characters (i.e. making them infinitely more colorful), but he also used their real names, so they're endlessly catching shit.

Now that there's another new release or something they're sick of it.

Memo to self: if I write a tell-all book about dz.com, only name the people who are in other countries or who don't believe in suing :P

also check out Tesis (Thesis) if you can find it, its a great film.
lesson #1262: Hollywood remakes of foreign films are almost ALWAYS inferior to the original.
