Ejecting from a high speed aircraft

Recommended Posts

Anybody here ever ejected? I always thought it would be cool. But evidence tends to suggest its kind of terrifying.
If you werent being shot at and you could do it for fun. Would you try it?
Is there anywhere in the former soviet union you can do it?

I have never met anyone who used the sunroof on a military aircraft and recalled the experience fondly.

My standard questions are:

1) Where did you regain consciousness?

2) How long were you hospitalized?

3) Have you recovered fully yet?

The answers I have received reinforce the idea that punching out is anything but a recreational activity.

some SR-71 pilots are rumored to have ejected at speeds of Mach 3 at 80,000 feet. This is a ground speed of around 2000 miles per hour, yet due to the thinner atmosphere at that altitude, the speed is closer to 400 KEAS. That is more like a 460 miles per hour.

read thi F-15 ejection. Not fun. http://www.ejectionsite.com/insaddle/insaddle.htm

In the service i was in a Harrier squadron...

You're right dude, these guys don't look good after ejecting. They resemble someone who just got in a car wreck - a number of things can happen.

I think that the limit is 2 punches through the roof and you gotta turn in your wings.

it wasnt an 'eject'...it was a good ol fashioned 'bail out' of a grummen avenger during WWII..

One of the guys I work with ejected out of an F4 with his backseater. Before being picked up, they spent two days on the ground in Laos because of bad weather. Laos was a terrible place to get shot down. Most airman lost over Laos never came home. PS I think he's more proud of being an Aggie.
