SkydivingMovies.com is full!

Recommended Posts

Yep, full! We've gone over the 20 gigabyte mark and filled the hard drive on the server.

While we work on a server upgrade, uploads are temporarily disabled. I'm gonna try to clean the server up a bit and make some extra room (I can't even upload html files right now).

I just wanna thank all those that have uploaded files recently. The number of uploads and downloads has really increased over the 9+ months that we've been on our current server. So of course I'd like to give a big thanks to Matt Crocker for donating the hosting and bandwidth that many of us have been abusing like crazy. Check out the attached chart. We've been on Matt's server since about March. Take a look at what's happened since then.

Cost of server upgrades is gonna depend on how fancy we wanna get. Anything from a donated 100 gig hard drive (hint hint) to a new $1000+ server, fully loaded. Might open up a paypal account if that's the way I decide to go.

Anyway, that's what's going on. Thanks everybody (except the guy that emailed me the other day to tell me I suck)!

Dave

thanks for the great work.

the guy who mailed you that you suck is certainly a sucker himself.

how about asking people not to upload such BIG files (loads of 80+ MB files...) and having them slightly smaller...

naa that won't work... I think Dave has a good idea, OPen a paypal account (insert my idea) and require everyone that DL's to pay a nominal 1 time fee.(/insert my idea)

Edit: I might have a 80 gig HD that I can part with... (might be upgrading my puter to a 250 gig HD...)

Type of hard drive? Oh with a big enough hammer, I'm sure Matt can get any to fit. j/k... he said a plain IDE drive is all we need. He recommended 200 gigs which would pretty much make this a one time only kinda thing. But I'm sure we can make due with something a little smaller if we have to.

I just got a 160 gig drive for $30... kicking myself for installing it now.

Hmm... 200 gig drive, 20 gigs of skydiving videos, 180 gigs free... lots of bandwidth... maybe I'll start a porn site on there too! Now accepting audition tapes...

IDE in a server?!! :o

You should probably try and get some level of fault tolerance for that thing. I suggest a minimum of a 3 drive RAID 5 setup, preferrably using SCSI drives.

BTW, I should be able to get you a decent deal on a refurbished HP server/drives if you want in the future.

While I'm here...

Anyone had trouble logging in? Some people have been sent right back to the login page every time they attempt to log in. I still don't know what caused the problem (I was never able to repeat it), but I changed the way the login system works a little bit. Hopefully it'll let everyone in now.

With the speed of IDE drives now, it's not necessarily needed to go the scsi route. As for RAID, RAID 1 would be fine.

I put the following into my home computer about 7 months ago. It has worked flawlessly since then.
3 @ 250gb ide drives in a Raid 5. Resulted in 465gb of redundant drive D: in my computer. Nearly half a terabyte of redundant space in my home computer for under $900. If I need more space, I'll add a fourth 250gb drive to the array.

Disk drives are a lot cheaper now. I think this could be done for under $700 now. However there are larger eide/ata drives available now. Seagate has a 400gb drive. That'd be cool to have four of them in a home computer.

Hi Pilotdave,

Just joined your site due to an email address stuff up "forgot the .au". Have downloaded a number of videos, I have to admit the one I like the best so far is wingnuts xmas eloy as it is just some friends having a great time in the sky. I have learnt alot from the malfunctions etc.. Have you resolved the space issue with the new disc or need more space? Let me know if there is anything I can do.

...then why is there no such thing as IDE RAID arrays on mid-high end business servers?

RAID 1 suffers from a 50% overhead and there is no performance benefit.

RAID 5 has less overhead, better performance in reading data, better scalability, but of course requires at least 3 drives.

IDE is CPU intensive as opposed to SCSI which is designed to serve multiple requests from multiple independant hosts unlike IDE/SATA.

Take a few minutes to look through the business class servers of any major manufacturer and you will see that NO ONE offers IDE RAID solutions... and it's for a reason.

Not all companies can afford SCSI and I would not suggest SCSI on something non critical like a skydiving site that does not bring in revenue etc.. I have seen IDE raid fail on systems it should not have run on, but then again I have seen it used well.

Possibly he got Raid1 and Raid0 confused, but how cares you look at what hardware you have and what you need to do and then pick the right one for the job.

You may have a CPU hit with IDE but damn with the grunt of computers now days and the guess that the bandwidth is the bottle neck does that really matter. Also you have hardware raid cards for ide to get some load off the CPU.

Can we keep this on the topic, if we want to debate IDE vs SCSI can we post a new thread please? They both have their time and place. PilotDave, just yell if you need a hand.
