Computer (Windows update) question

Recommended Posts

I currently have Win XP Pro on a desktop and laptop.
Windows Update suggested installing Media Player 10.

I did this OK on my desktop PC, and MP10 is there and runs OK.

However, my laptop (Dell Latitude) tells me the installation is complete, but when I run Media Player it's still version 9. I've tried 3 times with the same result. The installation history shows MP 10 installed.
But it isn't!

What's up?

check add remove programs and see which version is listed there...

That's odd (I guess), Windows Media Player is not listed there at all. But viewing "file types" shows it as the registered viewer for media files, and clicking on, say, a .wmv file brings it up OK.

The only wmplayer.exe on the entire drive is definitely version 9, yet Windows Update shows V10 as having been installed (four times now).

Would the install file be stored in a temporary directory somewhere?

That's correct, WM will not show up.

I'd say, go to the WM folder and check the ATTRIBUTES, it might be set to READ ONLY, I'll see if I can test or replicate your problem later.

First off, thanks for the help, guys.

OK, it's neither read-only nor hidden. It is version 9.0.0.3250 if that means anything.

Before spending a whole lot more time on this, is V10 worth the effort compared to V9 (other than to satisfy my curiosity at this point)?
