Wings container, what mains fit?

I really don't know anything about "what fits" in different containers. I don't want to press a safety concern by jamming too big a chute in a container or a too small one (can this cause problems?).

Is there a rule of thumb or chart or is it just personal experience? I'm trying to get a container where I could downsize eventually. I can relax in a 210 main and a 190 is no problem, but I give it my full attention.

So basically, if I ever move to a 170, what are my options? 190 sized container? Would 210 still be do-able?

Is this a container that you own or are buying used? If so get the serial number and call up Sunrise Rigging. They'll tell you what will fit in that container. If you're buying a new container, call them and tell them what you're wanting to do. They'll tell you if its possible or not.

You could even e-mail them.

Their containers tend to hold a decent range of canopies. They told me that mine would hold a 135-170. Edit to add: it's a W12-1 (I've put everything from 117-170 in it. The 170 was really tight, 135-150 fit very well, and 117 was pushing it a bit on the small side.)

If you're buying used do as suggested above and call/e-mail them with the serial number.

If you're buying new, tell them what size you want to put into it (don't lie on the order form) and that you'll want to downsize eventually. They can then build you an appropriately sized container, and when it's finished they can tell you how much you should be able to downsize in it. Or if you called/e-mailed and asked if they made a container that would hold 170-210, I'm sure they could answer that question as well.

I have a W8. There is no way that I would get a 170 in there, a 150 is tight, a 135 will be perfect and I can imagine that I'll be able to do a 120 if I ever go that low.

I have a W5 with a Spectre 135 and PDR 126.
It is a VERY tight fit.

Be patient with the faults of others; they have to be patient with yours.

Is that their new sizing chart or their old sizing chart?

The sizing chart changed about 4-5 years ago.

An example of the difference is that my W-13 is from 2002 and was sized for a PDr-176 but a 150-170 main. It fit a 170, but it was TIGHT. It fit a 150 perfectly. Also, it fits my Velo 111 quite well. Actually, really well. That's right, I've had the same rig since 2002 and have downsized through a 170 to a X-braced 111 with the rig.

Editted: Now I'm confused. The chart shows that your rig was sized for a 176 reserve and a 170 main. Which you had in there originally. How has the chart changed when its the same???

I very recently had a Wings rig made with a Pilot 150 main and Smart 150 reserve. The info on te container says I've got a W11...

According to that chart my container is made for a 170 main and a 160 reserve. That is not exactly what I ordered it for! Now is this right as there isn't a 150/150 option?

Surely given the other options I should have got a W8, 9 or 10? Or is this because of something like the Pilot packs bigger than other canopies, so a 150 Pilot is equivalent to the 170 sized main that they used for this chart?

Was very happy with my rig, but now thinking that the years of downsizing may not actually be possible...

When I was considering Wings (2 years ago) W8 for 150/150 was an option and still is (specially taking into account that PDR 143 is about 150/151 real area as per http://www.dropzone.com/files/archive/gear/Canopy_vols.html)

So that's you option than.

That would be correct. ALL canopies vary in size, even sometimes the exact same type and size of canopy from the same manufacturer. I have a pilot 168 and my container fits a sabre 190. My pilot fits in there nicely.

It can make it difficult to size containers and a 150 sabre may fit in one container perfectly and another 150 sabre may be tight in the exact same container. Unfortunately this chart isn't a set rule and it doesn't always work but that is the general rule of thumb. Pack volumes can and do vary.

Peoples preferences can and do vary. Some like tight pack jobs and containers, some prefer a looser pack jobs and care less about the "look" of the container. Unfortunately we don't know that unless it is specified on the order form but when specified we do our best to accommodate the request, otherwise we do what seems to work in most cases.

We welcome any feedback, especially from riggers, about canopy sizing as that is the best way to get good info, especially with all the newer canopies and European manufacturers out there that we have little or no experience packing.
