Variometers

Recommended Posts

I am posting here because I have read this forum for a couple years and havent found an equal paragliding forum.

So my question is about variometers. I have heard alot of jumpers PG so I would like your opinion. I am looking for a variometer that will give an audible alert when climbing or sinking. What are your favorites or where can you turn me on to?

I have found some that are $600 but do I really need to pay that for a beginner unit?

Thanks in advance
Darren

I think what you are referring to is a Vertical Speed Indicator.

VSI

Since skydivers only go one direction, Down, there is not much call for them in skydiving.:P

I don't know anything about Paragliding, but I know about googling...:P

It's $135 and "chirps" when you're climbing. So if its silent you can probably assume a decent.;)

Or for just under $300 you get a full on squared away electronic thingy:

Good luck!:)

try www.rmhga.org (Rocky Mountain Hang Gliding Association) for their discussion forums. Much smaller user base, but they will help.

Also...

I was very happy with my Flytec 4010 vario when I paraglided. Good info, easy to use... Now they have GPS models... But there are cheaper units that you can get that just beep instead of giving you a bunch of useful altitude info.

Sparky --

A vario is a high-tech and usually electronic version of a VSI. WAY more sensitive and usually with some sort of audio feedback to for the glider pilot. A higher tone means you're rising and a lower tone mean you're decending. This enables the pilot to keep his eyes on the skys and not watch the silly needle while searching for lift and traffic.

Well, the ones I used to go fixed wing gliding with did anyway. And yeah, they are unbelievably sensitive to lift and sink.
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

Mine changes tone as the rate of climb (or sink) changes.http://www.digiflyuk.com/runner.htm

To the original poster ... a vario may not be right for you (unless you can climb or ski really fast..
But, maybe one of the watches with altimeters may be suitable (Try... http://www.suuntowatches.com/suunto-skiing.htm )
