The 7.0-magnitude quake struck at about 7:50 p.m. southwest of the coastal community of Crescent City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Web site.

A tsunami warning was in effect from the California-Mexico border north to Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Residents were being evacuated from low-lying areas of Crescent City, KCBS radio reported.

A hotel employee in Crescent City told NBC the quake “shook the heck out of me” and some telephone lines were reported down.

This story will be updated.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I'm like 5 miles from the ocean so that was freaky.

I was living a couple blocks from the ocean on the central coast in 1987. We were under a tsunami warning for a few hours after the quake hit SF. We were a bit freaked but figured we'd be fine cuz we were on the second floor.

You're 5 miles from the ocean, but how far are you from the Bay? :|

The earth DID move here in Wisconsin, but I doubt it had anything to do with an earthquake... ;)

Sounds like it's over, at least for now. But there was a 5.4 on Saturday, a 7+ in Chile yesterday (or was it Sunday?), and a 6.8 in the Aleutian Islands yesterday. It's been shaking this side of the world lately...I wonder why.

Here on the southern tip of Vancouver Island -- we are going to stay dry. That's welcomed news ... we had a tsunami in 1964 that did significant damage -- and I guess some time in the future, it will happen again -- but not tonight!
