GARYC24 3 #1 November 14, 2005 I went to one this weekend. Never attended one before. Used a 22 rifle, 16ga and 12ga shotgun. I missed to whole target w/12 ga on second shot.~! Had some good laughs! Haven't shot a gun since 1980! Had a good time..$2 beers. hosted by American Legion. Anyone else go to shoots, etc.?

Oh, and so as to not completely hijack this thread: I used to shoot all the time, at least once every other weekend. Rifles, pistols, shotguns, muzzleloaders, etc. Most just a gathering of friends to sharpen our skills, and talk guns for a little while. I never did anything in comps. When your not up at the target (10 people, 10 targets) all guns were not loaded. You show up and leave with no loaded guns. If anyone showed up with with ammo they were escorted off. As far as I know it the ammo was not reloaded shells, bullets, etc..they had what you needed. They been doing this for many yrs. On a special note, earlier in the day, they did however kill a rattle snake and parents were told not to let them wander around, because there are snakes out there and they don't play back very well! Some other guy took the snack home and ate it! When your not up at the target (10 people, 10 targets) all guns were not loaded. You show up and leave with no loaded guns. Ah, so it was just a safety procedure. Got it. That makes perfect sense. USMC boot camp did the same type of thing. Anyone leaving the firing line with ammo was in serious trouble. The Drill Instructors were worried about getting shot in the middle of the night, I think. But usually anyone attempting that was just trying to save up an extra round in the hopes of using it to replace a target shot that was a "miss", and hope that no-one noticed he was cheating with extra rounds. And I got caught up in that rule once. They had already issued us our ammo, but I needed a firing pin retaining pin on my M16. So they ordered me back to see the armorer for the repair. So then the armorer gives me hell for being in the rear with ammo on my person, even though the gun is unloaded. I caught hell for a while until I finally got a chance to explain how it happened. All of this for good reason, of course. At one point during rifle qualifications, we lined up at the armorer after shooting so he could check our trigger pull weight. He hooked up his gauge to a guy's rifle about four people ahead of me in line, pulled, and "BOOM". The gun went off, shooting the guy in line in front of him in the back, blowing his guts out the front, and he subsequently died. Big investigation. Somehow he had left the firing line with a live round in the chamber. The recruit didn't detect it himself. The safety officer didn't detect it when the recruit left his firing position. The armorer himself should have checked first before pulling the trigger. Three safety failures, one dead recruit. I'm sure someone's head rolled.
