How do you know what pilot chute size is good for your canopy size?

Recommended Posts

Well? Is there any kind of pattern or table like there is with wingloading for example? i.e you downsize say 10 feet every jump so your wingloading goes up exponentially.

I want to get a Spectre 150 but I have no idea about the PC sizes, how do you know when it's too small or too large?B|

Do not worry to much.

Upon Atair 24" kill-line ZP PC would be recommended for 150 and smaller.

H/C is usually shipped with 27-28" kill-line PC.

I had about 350 jumps on a Pilot 150 with a 32" kill-line F111 PC without any problem.

Anyway, trust your rigger! He/she might give you a call if there something coming up...

Oh Oh oh I know this one! The First Poynter's Manual and the Old FAA Senior Rigger exam question!!

Pilot chute should be about 3% the Surface area of the canopy.

Oh, Wait. That information is a little old. So, when did people start jumping these new-fangled squares???:D

A pilotchute comes with the rig, not with the canopy.

So, why is that?

The size/type of the PC has more to do with:
a) getting the deployment bag out of the container, or
b) canopy opening speed/characteristics?

Reading PDs article, "How to Prevent Hard Openings",
(http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/hrdopn.pdf

they appear to be saying that the PC shold be matched to the canopy which tells us that the PC coming with the rig is just plain nutz.
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

If its not coming with the canopies, someone should provide that too ;)

Do not make them confused. Simple: One size fits all. ;)

H/C limits the size of canopies can be used with it.

Maybe it's because the rig is built for a specific range of sizes (pack volumes) and the provided PC will work well with any canopy that will fit the rig?

I'm trying to generate some conversation and spread some knowledge here....anyone?
