Perscription Goggles

Recommended Posts

I know some of you out there need to wear perscription glasses while skydiving...and I'm just like you.

Currently, I have a pair of goggles that fit my perscription glasses inside, however, when I'm freeflying, the wind catches the bottom of the goggles and lifts them off.

I'm wondering if there is a good paid of form fitting goggles that I can get which I can also have made into a perscription.

Also note...I typically wear a open face helmet...I really don't like a closed helmet.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

This summer I bought a pair of prescription goggles from Sport RX. Quick service.
These Wiley X, SG-1 prescription goggles are by far the best I have ever worn.
They are such a good fit, that I can wear the strap half as tight as any other model of goggles.

I myself wear contact lenses and these are a great solution to not having to wear glasses. I understand that some people can't stand to put a little silicon disc in their eye. I have thought about laser eye surgery but have decided against it, long term effects aren't yet known and your eyesight can still deteriorate... However I have found a solution!

Have any of you heard of ORTHO K contact lenses or ORTHOKERATOLOGY?

Ortho K contact lenses are as they suggest contact lenses, and if you can get over putting a little bit of silicon in your eye you will praise this whole concept.

You go to a local optometrist that specialises in ortho k and have standard eye tests. They map the contours of your eye with a computer (no lasers or cutting, or anything touching your eye) they then get a set of hard lenses made for your eyes... Now here is the magic... You put them in at night and sleep in them, when you wake the next morning take them out and you have 20:20 vision all day, for some patients it can last upto 2 days!. They work by flattening the surface of your eye to the correct shape in order to see perfectly. So during the day, no lenses glasses or anything, the process is totally reversible by just not putting the lenses in at all... So totally painless. So going back to the subject of goggles... you can have whichever ones you like ;)

My vote for SportRX as well.

Yep. I use them too, for most freefall jumps. The only problem I have is on CRW jumps. My rx goggles take away my peripheral vision which I really need to be able to look behind me when receiving a canopy dock, so I use an old pair of glasses with my full face helmet, sans shield for those jumps.

i wear a pair of prescrition oakley`s. i believe the model is called "five" my prescription is not too strong tho, making the lenses fairly thin. i have about 1000 jumps with them, never been blown off my face, even without a helmet sometimes. of course i have a strap on them as well...

leys too, and he recomments them greatly. Perhaps with a thin enough lens, they they'll work for me. I don't think I have a very strong perscription, but I'll check what oakleys has available, and compare that with sport rx.

Sport RX has a couple that look really interesting, but I'm not sure if I want to get them, either because on the RX insert, or just the look of them alone.

I'll keep looking around...with winter on the horizon, I have a little bit of time.

(PS...I'm pretty drunk right now...so if what i've written doesn't make sense...I hope you can forgive me) :)

I have been using contacts inside std googles as previously mentioned. I would think however landing would really suck if my contacts dried out and fell out. Since I jump mainly in Socal/desert areas. Got me thinking, do people ever carry a spare set of glasses jumping ? I have lost contacts bicycling and surfing before but thats not a big deal. (w/ disposables)

If anyone wants to go the Wiley-X SG-1 route, just PM me.

I've got a set of frames (two sets actually), two sets of arms, and the snap-in goggle strap. I'll part with them really cheaply (especially when compared to the price of those items new).

You can just call SportRX and have them make up the pop-in lenses for your prescription and you're set. I think they charge $60 for the lenses.
