I was lucky as a kid to have mentors and coaches in the sport (5-pin bowling) so I thought I would give back. I spent many a weekend with these kids coaching them, cheering them on and more than many a night in a hotel somewhere making sure THEY stayed in their rooms (or a the very least, stayed in the hallway with me where I could see them). I recall a time where I tied two boys INTO their room so they wouldn't run amok throughout the hotel (or with the other 16 year old girls that were IN the hotel)!! And they thought I was cool for doing that. It's really cool to see these former teenagers now ... some are 25+ years old and doing well in the sport and their lives. And it's cool when they tell me that I made a difference in their life. That I was part of the reason they turned out the way they are. It was time well spent. Ah ... now you made me want to get back volunteering with them. Hmmm ... got some free time ... guess I could. A few years ago I used to volunteer to run a local snowboard event here in town. I did that for almost 8 years. Basically I would call and get free stuff from local stores and reps and then raffle(free raffle) the stuff off to poor snow bums/college students.
