riddle me this smart guy

Recommended Posts

okay so i was taking moron math (lowest math class at school) (cuz i can't remeber how to do math since i was in high school 8 years ago) and took the final on tueday and this problem has been bugging the shit out of me, only one i wasn't sure on that it wasn't because i couldn't remebr the damn formula or something.. so here it is will write it out since i don't know how to do superscript here...

[17(x squared)] minus 2x = 0 that is again [seventeen (x squared)] minus 2x equals zero.. only thing i could come up with is that x equals 0.... but for some reason i want to think i am wrong...

don't feel dumb man... you gave a legit reason to not know what's going on here... B|

Trust me I'm an engineer and when I started my graduate program a little over a year ago I walked in my Calculus review and had no idea what was going on (it had been about 6 years since my last math course...) after a year of being back in school... I can do it again... but it took a little while to get back into the groove... :)

My professor started the first day of Calculus 3 with the following statement:

"You will never use what you are about to learn unless you work for NASA and even then you probably won't use anything you learn."

Approximately half the students dropped after that lecture and half of the remaining students failed. Good luck and remember to put the fun in functions!

if i copied your problem right..
17x^2 -2x=0
the first step is to factor out the x
so you have
x(17x-2)=0
so that means either
x=0 or 17x-2=0
which means x=0 or 2/17

(yeah i'm a math geek):P

x is not 0;

17x(sq) - 2x = 0
17x(sq) = 2x
17x = 2
x = 2/17

if x = 0 then you would have had 0 = -2

You should get some sleep. You are obviously tired.

The person that said something about NASA and not using it. Yup I'm that guy cept I don't work for NASA.

I majored in math and took some seriously funked up classes that the teacher even said well this stuff really isn't used in life, but it's used to explain stuff in life. So when you want an explanation you ask somebody that knows math. Just don't ask me, I usually don't care:P:P

Did you hear about the constipated mathmetician ? He worked his problem out with a pencil.

I think this problem has mentally constipated you.

Constants: x0, y0, m, b, c

(x - x0)^2 + ((m * x + b) - y0)^2 = c^2

x = ?

why would you use the line equation?

Actually you could use the following formula for any equation having this format:
ax2 + bx + c = 0

x will equal:

-b + or - the square root of (bsquared - 4ac)
2a

In this case a = 17 b = -2 and c = 0

since c = 0 you could eliminate the "4ac" bit, so the root of bsquared is just b, but positive.

x = (2 + 2 ) / 34 = 0.1176 (or 2/17)

or

x = (2 - 2)/ 34 = 0

*This equations is used to find a point on a line given a distance from another point on the line.

x = (sqrt(-b^2-2b(m*x0-y0)+c^2(m^2+1)-m^2*x0^2+2m*x0*y0-y0^2)-b*m+m*y0+x0)/(m^2+1)

or

x = -(sqrt(-b^2-2b(m*x0-y0)+c^2(m^2+1)-m^2*x0^2+2m*x0*y0-y0^2)+b*m-m*y0-x0)/(m^2+1)

Just some old school factoring! ;)
