Can you imagine the tenth dimension

Recommended Posts

Marvelous presentation... except for one thing. The leap from 8 to 10 troubles me. I think they skipped 9.

Yes, I know they mentioned 9, but didn't flesh it out the way they fleshed out 1-8 and 10. I can't put my finger on it but I feel that they cheated.

But I'm going to have to keep thinking about that. It's extremely abstract.

Go have a few drinks then watch it again :P. It will make more sense and as an added bonus all those squiggly lines and the alcohol might make for an amusing mentally soundtracked visualization. (ie stick figures doing it in the 6th and 9th dimension:D)

While this "way of imagining" is not the accepted explanation of string theory, it does have thought provoking connections to many people's impression of how our reality is constructed.

In other words, thank you for paying attention to my BS and please buy my book. btw, don't use this explanation to impress your physics buddies. they may laugh at you;)

if you like that have a look at the film
"What the Bleep Do We Know"
It' all about similar theories.
Plus it has Marlee Mailin in it:)

Could there be infinite dimensions based on that? Seems like it.

As I understood that theory, ten is the top. The tenth includes every potential reality, at every point in space and time. The guy even says that near the end.

All just theories.

There is no way to prove anyof these

Gee, you'd think the title was "can you imagine..." for a reason! :S

Technically, you can't prove next week exists. ;)

I think the theories are fairly sound, and at the very least, interesting.

using time as a physical 4th dimension is such a punt

but if you follow that line of thought, it's really easy to add dimensions like he attempts....

so it follows in the summary how?

1 - length
2 - width
3 - depth
4 - time
5 - alternate timeline space (personal)
6 - alternate timeline space (since creation - what a punt)
7 - alternate universes (another punt, 5=6=7)
8 - alternate laws of nature
9 - he glossed over this
10 - all of reality

Edit: I don't think he got past the 3rd dimension with any success. I've read children's books that did better. Sci Fi books that did MUCH better.

And that right there is the exact problem I've always had with the theories about other dimensions. Every one of them relies on the assumption that higher dimensions have the same basic physical properties as the third.

Of course, you can't really blame the scientists for modeling their theories this way. It's sort of like art; you create what you know. How are we supposed to interpret ideas that are beyond our brains' limited comprehension?

Two more assumptions inherent in this post:

Who says the higher dimensions have physical properties at all? How do we even know there are higher dimensions? ;)
