Johnsisland 0 #1 November 25, 2006 I saw a post about fears, claustrophobia and and Cessna 182's. Just curious what everybody has seen loaded in a 182. I "overhead" a discussion between to skydivers, one of whom said they had five people plus the pilot, the other said four plus pilot on said load. The instructor was kneeling aft of the person sitting next to the pilot, leaning forward on takeoff. JArch? I can arch just fine with my back to the ground. wildcard451 0 #5 November 25, 2006 It's times like that that I loved being one of the big kids. I've had 182 rides where because of weight limitations only three of us made a full load. Nice and comfy that ride was.

howardwhite 6 #8 November 25, 2006 I cast the six vote (even though the dead stick part didn't happen). The pilot (also a jumper) had just gotten his commercial ticket the same week. His friends, some of whom were really small, asked him to take six. He asked me; I said I didn't so. He asked another jumper, who was also a pilot and a big FAA controller guy. He said he didn't think so. Nonetheless, it happened. The FAA dude ripped the pilot up and down, but didn't do anything else. I saw the pilot last year. He was a senior 767 captain. Five was pretty common in the 182 at that DZ in the late sixties and early seventies. [I also heard about, but never saw, seven jumpers in a Cessna 180, at a backwoods DZ in Maine. Knowing the pilot involved, I totally believe it.] HW
leroydb 0 #9 November 25, 2006 why didnt you sit in the seats or sit right side in the cockpit?? Quote I kept sliding on the floorLeroy ..I knew I was an unwanted baby when I saw my bath toys were a toaster and a radio...
usedtajump 1 #10 November 25, 2006 I've been on a 182 load that consisted of seven jumpers and pilot. I have a picture of it but won't post it because the pilot is still working in a position of responsibility for a major airline. The older I get the less I care who I piss off. FlyinseivLP2 0 #11 November 25, 2006 Well you will get some different answers here since there is 2 versions of the 182. The regular 182 is usually configured for 4 + pilot and the widebody set for 5 + pilot.

Last C-182 I jumped from was 2 years ago at Lost Prairie... 4 of us on the load.. and me.. spotting first out with a Stylemaster Rig witha Papillion round in it with a C-9 belly wart reserve....sitting next to the pilot... SHIT... good thing I am not claustrophobic... I could not freakin move till I opened the door and rolled my legs out to spot for the water jump over the lake. Zing 2 #16 November 25, 2006 At a Michigan dropzone, we did 16 ways with two photographers using a Cessna 182, a Cessna 180 and a Cessna 206 ... nicknamed the "DC-206." This was early 70s and we all had gutter gear except for one or two jumpers. All the airplanes were packed.Zing Lurks

airtwardo 7 #20 November 25, 2006 Like O.J.~ "IF" that is, I were ever to have been even remotely involved in grossly overloading a 182... It 'might' have been back in the 70's, making a quick hop from one DZ to an accuracy meet at another DZ 15 miles away. We 'may' have had...One pilot, Five jumpers with gear, three wuffo girlfriends, and 4 cases of Budweiser on board.... The guys at the destination DZ, said it looked like a circus clown car with all the people unfolding themselves and continuing to get out! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
Johnsisland 0 #21 November 25, 2006 QuoteWhere's the answer for 'as many as there are FAA-mandated seat belts for'? So, if I arrange for ten seat belts, will you fly in that configuration? J

If you had been involved in GROSSLY overloading an 182, I bet that would have been quite a feat to fly the plane. Did you pile four people in the area next to the pilot? JArch? The regular 182 is usually configured for 4 + pilot and the widebody set for 5 + pilot. Yup, and I've seen five jumpers in both configurations. I should add to my eariier reference to the C180 with seven that I believe the pilot/owner had removed that pesky plywood from the back of what was once a baggage compartment. That dead space, occupied only by rudder and elvevator cables, maybe some antenna wires, and a battery, then becomes available for jumpers facing aft to stow legs. Center of gravity? What's that all about? HW
