I live in Frederick, Maryland. Birthplace & gravesite of Francis Scott Key, who wrote our National Anthem.

Also an important site during the Civil War: The Confederates briefly took over Frederick & held it for ransom for $250,000 or so.

Frederick was also the site of many Civil War hospitals: some of the churches were temporarily devoted to taking care of wounded soldiers.

Frederick was also where the American patriot Barbara Freitchie lived, whom John Greenleaf Whittier wrote a famous poem about:

The clustered spires of Frederick stand
Green-walled by the hills of Maryland.

The 405 freeway and L.A. traffic, crime, gangs, smog, etc... On the lighter side of things there is Six Flags (if you like standing in line for hours), a great coast line full of world-class breaks and bikinis (everyone should visit Venice beach at least once) and best of all four great DZ's within a hour and a half's drive from downtown.(Taft, Perris, California city and Lake Elsinore).

My hometown, Huntsville, AL where I grew up has the Space and Rocket Museum with full-size mock-ups of the space shuttle, Saturn 5 and other rockets on display, and Space Camp right next door. Plus, a few miles south on the Redstone Arsenal (home of defense and space contractors including Marshall Space Flight Center and a military base) is where they first test-fired the main engines for the Saturn 5 rockets that went to the moon, and it is now a national historic site. My parents remember the day they did the first test. The house we lived in at the time was about 10 miles away, and the test rattled all the windows pretty good!

We are better known in Japan than we were in SoCal due to the large number of corporate headquarters located there, Mitsubishi, Fuji, Bandai, etc. Most people in SoCal have no idea where the hell Cypress is.

The only people of note from Cypress are led by the 80's mullet man himself, the Greek super stud - John Stamos. I went to high school with members of the band, "Lit" - and I can confirm that A. Jay Popoff is the lead singer's actual name. Yes, he really is "A. Jay Popoff."

There's another guy from Cypress, who has referred to himself as being Cablinasian (also known as "Eldrick"), who is fairly highly regarded within his sport as being one of the best. Even though he went to a competing high school and I didn't play golf then, I covered golf for the yearbook and I waited until our team played Western so I could see him play - there was a buzz about him. Maybe you've heard of him, too. He only made about 90 million dollars in 2005.
