chris_uk 0 #1 September 29, 2006 Hi I was wondering if a good quality snowboard helmet would be ok for skydiving? I am looking to buy one for snowboarding and to save me money, use the same one for skydiving. Anyone know if this would be ok? Thanks
PhreeZone 15 #2 September 29, 2006 Yep! No major issues with it as long as you remove anything that could snag a line like a goggle clip or whatever.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

skybytch 259 #4 September 29, 2006 Only downside is that it won't have a place for an audible built into it, but with some ingenuity you could figure out a way to mount one.
DJL 235 #5 September 29, 2006 It'll do until you realize that you're not cool unless your helmet matches your jumpsuit. Put gaffer's tape over snag points. The last thing you want is a line or riser snagging on the goggle clip. The two likely outcomes of a cutaway from that are the chin strap choking you out or the main canopy entangling with the reserve and probably still choking you out sometime before impact."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
kelpdiver 2 #6 September 29, 2006 I got a Protec one - nice and shiny and a $15 season close out. Had to remove the goggle clip on the back - huge snag hazzard, then put black electrical tape to seal over the roughness of the edge of the screw hole. It had soft padding ears (basically the earless half shell with a cloth/foam ear extension that seems like a nice alternate to my traditional full protec, but I've found that it's just not nearly as secure on the head. I can cinch down the straps but esp when tracking, it feels like it's lifting off of me. It would serve its protective needs well at the door and on landing, but in freefall it is distracting, has potential to fly off.
JustaBill 0 #7 September 29, 2006 I use a snowboard helmet. Like everyone else has said, take off the goggle strap and tape over any other snag hazards. As far as an audible, mine has vents by the ears so I use a couple of rubber bands to mount my audible and it has worked great so far.------------------------------------------------ I've done so much, with so little, for so long I'm now expected to do everything with nothing forever

Tornolf 0 #9 September 30, 2006 A friend of mine is only alive because he had on a skiing helmet when he had a parachuting accident. Anything lesser and he wouldn't have made it. A snowboarding helmet will do much better protection-wise than a skydiving helmet. You can't go wrong as long as you remove the snag points like everyone suggested.A waddling elephant seal is the cutest thing in the entire world. -TJ
skysmurf2 0 #10 September 30, 2006 I use a snowboarding helmet as well - its actually perfect for jumping. Had a rigger check it out and they okayed it- no snag points and it has a small pocket on the inside which houses my audible. its a good choice - cheaper than a skydiving helmet (at least mine was but i fit a junior size....) and a lot stronger. NWPoul 1 #11 September 30, 2006 As other says - a snowboard helmet work just fine... Regarding Optima - it can be put in see pic (the strap you can see over optima - does not actually that hold it, just decided route an exess of strap that way almost all the strap routed thrugh the "brakets" on backside os the device and thrugh inner plastik net of the helmet) It was a little bit "pushing" on ear but after few jumps it became to feel cofortable of couse it will be not as easy to take it off (and probably I'll be a little bit confused by swoop signals during my first snowboard riding with mounted optima;) But...IMHO the price of a skydivers helmets is too high compared to it protective properties (going to buy an RAWA newertheless:) )Why drink and drive, if you can smoke and fly?
