Turbines Have Ruined Aviation!! >:(

We must get rid of turbines.


They are ruining aviation.


We need to go back to big round engines.
Anybody can start a turbine, you just need to
move a switch from "OFF" to
"START" and then remember to move it back
to "ON" after a while.


My PC is more difficult to start. Cranking a round engine
requires skill, finesse and style. On some planes, the
pilots are not even allowed to do it. Turbines start by
whining for a while, then give a small lady-like poot and
start whining louder.


Round engines give a satisfying rattle-rattle, click-click
BANG, more rattles, another BANG, a big macho fart or two,
more clicks, a lot of smoke and finally a serious low
pitched roar. We like that. It's a guy thing. When you
start a round engine, your mind is engaged and you can
concentrate on the flight ahead.


Starting a turbine is like flicking on a ceiling fan:
Useful, but hardly exciting.


Turbines don't break often enough, leading to aircrew
boredom,complacency and inattention. A round engine at
speed looks and sounds like it's going to blow at any
minute. This helps concentrate the mind.

Turbines don't have enough control levers to keep a
pilot's attention.There's nothing to fiddle with during
the flight.


Turbines smell like a Boy Scout camp full of Coleman
lanterns.


Round engines smell like God intended flying machines to
smell. ;)

when they can build a radial engines that can get me to 14k in 7 min w/ air conditioning. speak up again, otherwise, settle down, and respect the missiles we ride to altitude, lest they spite you!

Ok SO I am picking up my brand new jumpsuit next week and it does not have a SINGLE oil spot on it.. this is WRONG... I NEED to go front float on the DC-3 at Eloy at the DZ.Com boogie..I am big.. I make a good air block for others coming out the door:P

I've got a picture somewhere of my grandfather, in 1931, standing on the wooden raft like platform of an experimental helicopter. It was powered by a rotary engine, where-in the cylinders revolved around the crankshaft. All of the men in the photo are covered with slung oil. The craft actually hopped about eight feet of the ground and then slammed home! Those were the good ole days.

Nah... just jump a Beech 18, and stand in the door as the people in front of you pull them selves up and fart around awhile. I'll be the guy standing well clear, then running and diving up into the door to keep the oil from getting on my lense. Heck, I might even man the fire extinguisher while I wait. :D

Yeah.. the last of the piston 18's left Xenia this summer. I've got at least 75 and probally more like 100+ jumps out of them in the last few years. I loved manning the fire extinquisher after having the plane parked for a few weeks.

We have one just to the south of us in Toledo WA.. and the very next time its clear enough on a saturday or a sunday...I plan on loading up 10 people from our DZ ( to escape the C-182 tandem slowdowns:S)... and drive down there to TRY to make an 8 way... yeah.. my counting IS that good.. but I saw how many ..uh bigways did NOT happen out of our Caravan we had all summer:P

The owner is trying to sell it so I am hoping there is SOME clearing here in Western WA SOMETIME this winter...before he sells it. There cant be all that many still flying.

Them were the days....when DC-3's were the Queens of the jump fleet. They could be ill tempered queens and blow a jug - and often would, usually right before takeoff on a sunset load, so you'd have to come taxiing back. But geez, they were lovely. They were so big and ROOMY. Everybody used to sit in each other's laps and you could lean back and snooze on the ride up. The lovely engine drone would send you right off to snoozeville.

I appreciate the speed and reliability of turbos, but riding in an Otter is like being stuffed into a submarine with wings. A DC-3 was more like booking into a grand hotel.

Woa, ya limp lil newbie...

T-bones engines failed as fast as any round engine ( and probably sooner! ).

It took real men to drive twinbo failed engines around the sky... when they fail, they usually throw metal parts (pistons and the like) through the cowling and many times into the fuselage... you ain't seen real failures til you saw a gso-480 come apart at 50 inches of manifold pressure!

yehaa!

the old days were great (thank god they're over!)

p.s. my super charged twinbo's would beat most super otters to 14000... but only for about a season or two if I was lucky, 12 minutes to 14000.... bring on the -28 otters, i'd race, (while the engine was still intact). Who you callin' pussy? hehehehe
