Old School Professional Wrestling

Recommended Posts

For a few years when I was a kid I used to watch WWF, NWA, UWF professional wrestling, both on TV and live.

Who are some of your favorites from back in the day? Some of mine

Jake the Snake Roberts
Ronnie Garvin
Rowdy Roddy Piper
Road Warriors
British Bulldogs
Ricky the Dragon Steamboat
Randy Macho Man Savage
One Man Gang
The Hart Foundation
Junkyard Dog
Hillbilly Jim
George The Animal Steele

And favorite matches? Mine was Road Warriors vs. Midnight Express, steel cage match in Civic Center, Philly.

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

remember barron von roski (sp?) he was such a mean mean man. wahoo mcdaniel was cool. amazing how real it all seems when you're a kid...

Remember when all it took to be a professional wrestler was a complete lack of modesty? When you could be a fat, bald guy but as long as you didn't mind wearing nothing but a speedo and walking around with a giant bone, or a 2X4, or wearing a turban on your head, you could be a star?

Ah, the good old days. :D

Funny you should mention Ronnie Garvin . I went to high school with him. Also out of, or passing through, that school was:
Mike Gossett (Mike Graham)
Terry Bollea (Hulk Hogan)
Richard Slater (Dirty Dick Slater)
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

I think you are thinking of Pak Song (not the claw). He did use "the claw" to submit his opponents.

I grew up with WTCG Channel 17 and Gordon Solie calling the matches on Georgia Championship Wrestling.

My favorites:
Bob Armstrong
Tony Atlas
Mr. Wrestling II
Ole, Gene, and Lars Anderson
Dusty Rhodes
Abdulah the Butcher
Pak Song
Andre the Giant
...and more...

The Sheik

I remember the Sheik. He used to have a snake or something, and then would pull out stuff that looked like walnut shellers and stick them in wrestler's noses. Crazy guy.

I grew up watching Georgia Championship Wrestling with Gordon Solie too! That later became WCW out of Atlanta. I also watched some of WWF in the old days when Hulk Hogan won his first title against The Iron Shiek (who I recently ran into on my plane last year, man is his body all beat up after all those years! :o)

Ric Flair (can you believe he's STILL wrestling???)
Gene and Arn Anderson
Tully Blanchard
Dusty Rhodes
Bob Armstrong and his 3 sons
Austin Idol (man his arms were HUGE)
Sid Vicious (he was a crazy sonofabitch!)
Larry Zbyszko (sp?)
The Rock n Roll Express
Road Warriors (Legion of Doom)
Jeff Jarrett
Harley Race
Sting
Jerry Lawler
Jesse Ventura (former Minn Gov)

Anybody remember that asshole Jimmy Cornette? :D He now runs TNA Impact.

I once shared a plane with George "The Animal" Steele, Brad Rheingans and Tony Roma. That George was a real character. Nobody was sitting in the seat in front of him so he pushed the seatback down to a horizontal position and stretched his leg out on it. It wasn't long before the flight attendant asked him to not do that.

Ah... the good old days. Pro Wrestling today is a totally different animal now. Now it is more spectacular and the wrestlers are doing more crazy things than they used to, but there's also too much fluff and stupid crap, but hell, WWE sells out every damn arena they show up in, and Monday Night Raw has ruled the cable ratings for 20+ years.

I did watch the first three Wrestlemanias on PPV at the local arena. This was before PPV became available at home. Anybody remember Hulk Hogan becoming the only wrestler to ever body slam Andre the Giant? Also Mr T's boxing match vs Rowdy Roddy Piper?

Obviously Tampa...Gordon Solly was a hoot.

Eddie Graham promoted most of those matches nad participated in most of them.

Back in the day, way before your time, we had
The Badinoff Brothers
Kurt and Karl Von Braun who's "manager" always got into the act by distracting the ref or tripping somebody with his cane or some sort of thing.

God I can't even remember most of them.

Saturday afternoon they all wrestled at Tampa's old Sportatotium ($1 at the door) and the Boys Club would take a bus load of us kids over to watch every week.

One time this guy threw Eddie Graham (my hero) out of the ring and jumped down to hit him while he was down...I jumped out of my seat, ran up and punched the guy in the nuts...then ran like a banshee. I was banned by the Boys Club for 2 weeks.
:D:D:D

Yes he was!! I remember the look on his face when one of the wrestlers "choked" him. :D

And you must remember The Great Molenko, The Brisco Brothers (Jack and Jerry) and the Funks ( one was Terry and the other was Bob...I think) And there were masks everywhere!

Those were the days. My brother beat me up many times in the name of Jack Brisco...he always told me what hold he had me in! [:/]:P:D:D
