mtv

Recommended Posts

I read an article on mtv today. It posed a lot of interesting questions.

I remember when mtv was Music TV. It played music.

Then, it expanded to lifestyle. It was an old concept.
As old as movie stars. Find someone famous and show them getting out of a Rolls. Most people don't compare being an actor, or in a rock band, to their daily definition of work.

Being a rock star and partying all the time is a dream life. Music videos promoted the lifestyle. Money and parties.

The lifestyle concept went to "reality" shows.
The Osbournes, Real World, Road Rules.
Those got boring and then network tv picked it up.

The new soap operas. Old school soap operas were about well-dressed people talking about money and power. Instead of dressing up and going to expensive restaurants, the new shows are about good looking people boinking. Soft porn for the average viewer.

Is mtv passed its purpose? Does anyone watch it anymore?

My kids will watch the stupid dating shows that they have. I hate the programs, but it's not totally a bad thing. When I see bad behavior on there, I initiate a conversation like, "would you ever date a person like that" and talk about the attributes I didn't like. Such a mom thing, I'm sure they love me doing that. :P

Here in the Denver area, "The Tube" is broadcast on the same digital signal that carries the CW channel:

It is what MTV was in the early days. The best part is their slogan: "Like Music TeleVision, but with music!" :D

It passed its purpose 15 or 20 years ago. Its now pure horse shit and has been for a very long time.

Unless you're in the demographic they're aiming at. 13-24. Then it's entertaining television.

I remember coming home from school one day and flipping channels. There was this new one I had never seen before, that's when I discovered MTV. The day it was launched was incredible. I know when I was home the TV was always on MTV waiting for my favorite song to come on. I had the biggest crush on Martha Quinn. I know I was/am a geek. Soon after though I discovered the darkside of music called metal and MTV became dead to me... I waved bye to Martha and MTV forever. Well until Saturday nights when Headbangers ball came on. :P

LONG LIVE METAL!! \m/ B| \m/
