ESPN . . . WTF are you thinking?

Recommended Posts

. . . since when did the 2005 national spelling bee become a sport?[:/]

Eating dinner - turned on the TV and - there it was - the 2005 annual spelling bee.>:(

I almost puked.

then - no shit - the banner for coming attractions let me know that we were indeed watching the 2005 annual spelling bee, and that the rerun from 2006 was next.:|

Hard to believe they put that crap on and didn't even cover THIS! :S

That is a LOT closer to a sport than a Spelling Bee.:|

Wouldn't it be great if they had the finals on national TV at the Univ. of Maryland?

I'd say a spelling bee is more of a sport than poker. :S:D

Umm - No . . .

You can make millions playing poker -

and it feels better than not poking her.

I don't think a sport is defined by how much you can make. A spelling bee is pure performance, poker is a combination of performance and luck.

OK, I'll grant you that. :D

That BS should be on PBS, which almost NOBODY watches anyway. :S

E.S.P.N. does stand for entertainment and sports programming network, so they don't always have to show just sports. That being said I don't think a spelling b can in any way be construed as entertaining either.

Death is so permanant, and I'm just not ready for that kind of committment.

No it doesn't, it doesn't stand for anything.

When the network was conceived by the Rasmussen's, they wanted to go with something catchy that would be an acronym along the lines of 'Sports News Programing' or 'Total Sports Network'

(News stands for North East West & South by the way):)

One story goes that they were throwing letters around a conference table and kept coming back to ESPN simply because it had a 'rhyme' to it.

Another is that the E is actually the mathematical symbol for Total.
The SP for sports, and the N for network.

It wasn't until long after programing was 'on air' that someone came up with words to go along with the letters...

Entire Sports Programming Network was the first plan, Entertainment came later, now it's only the letters again on the corporate docs.

MIGHT be why they're so into the Spelling Bee thingie! ;)
