What is a pass?

Why is it called a pass? If a girl makes a "pass" at a boy or man, isn't "pass"ing someone bad? Who coined the word "pass" anyways?


I don't think it makes any sense. If you think I'm making a pass at you then I'm probably not. I'm not "pass"ing you by I'm making it clear I like you! I'm very confused about this "pass" thing.
