NYE in Vegas??

Recommended Posts

So my friends and I are considering going to Vegas for NYE. Has anyone ever been or anyone live in that area make recommendations based on clubs or parties or what its like in general?

Is it true they turn the streets into a huge block party after midnight???

Any help is appreciated if anyone knows...
Puttin' some stank on it.

Lived in Vegas for 10 years...

Yes, they close the strip about 4pm on NYE from Sahara to Tropicana. You'll have to walk or take the monorail to go up and down the strip. 1-2 hours to get your car/taxi and get back to the hotel. Last year there were about 200K people in Vegas for New Years. Be prepared for a shock for hotel rooms. They usually require a 3 night minimum and are 3-5X the usual weekend rate. Most of the casinos have some sort of fireworks show shot from the rooftops. Clubs are going to charge anywhere from $250-$1000 per person to get in.

I went two years ago. It was a really good time, but I do not think I would go back.

Yeah, the strip that night was a huge party...they basically close down the whole street and everyone parties it up. Open containers of alcohol are allowed on the street there...it was a little weird to be carrying a cup of beer down the street and have no one say anything. The final countdown to midnight is pretty cool too...all the jumbotrons up and down the strip switched to a countdown. The fireworks show that followed was the best I have ever seen...it was shot from the top of many of the casinos and synchronized to music.

We didnt go to any clubs that night, but I have heard you will pay top dollar to get into them on New Year's

Rooms are very very expensive....and hard to find.We stayed with some friends who live in the outskirts. The traffic getting to / from the strip was bad. Finding parking was worse. We ended up parking in the MGM Grand garage...it took us 2 and a half hours just to get out of the garage.

Have Fun B|

my friends all went last year. they said they would NEVER go back on NYE. no room to move, hotels were outrageously priced, and they couldn't afford to get into ANY of the clubs to celebrate. basically, all the extra stuff they wanted to do by going on new years eve was too expensive. it ended up being a normal trip they could have taken any other time and paid half as much for.

hope you have very deep pockets.
Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!

I was there two years ago. Would I do it again? You bet, but knowing what I know now, here's what I'd do differently.

We couldn't find a room for a couple of nights for less than about 400-500/night. So we stayed at New Orleans, which is off the strip. Wife and I are very familiar with the hotels on the strip as we go 3-4 times a year, so this was the best deal at the time.

Getting onto the strip during the evening wasn't a problem. Cabs can come and go and drop you off in the back entrances of most of the hotels n the strip during the day before dark. However, getting off the strip is a different story. First, as others have said - prepare for a 2-3 hour wait after midnight to get a cab off the strip. The cab lines are about 100-200 people deep and since it's most people are leaving the strip instead of going, be prepared to wait for 2-3 hours. We waited at MGM for about 2 hours around 2 AM and didn't get back to New Orleans until around 5 - the sun was just about to come up.

The crowds weren't as bad as I expected. Yes, they block the streets and there are tons of people on the street. We were playing poker in Alladdin and came down to the strip about 15 min before midnight. It wasn't a problem getting onto the strip, and took only about 15 min to get back into the hotel. Be prepared to show a room key to get into any of the strip hotels after midnight, so we borrowed a friend key who was staying in the hotel. That was also the night they blew up the Boardwalk hotel, so that was cool.

Next time, I would DEFINITELY get a room on the strip. It's worth every penny to not have to wait in cab lines and/or getting into the hotel after midnight. Or if you're staying with 4-5 people, there's limos that are available for about 100 bucks per trip, so it works out about the same if you take a cab for two people. Wife and I didn't want to spend that money so we just waited in line like the rest of the fools. Even if you park your car in the garage, it's still going to take an hour or two to get out. Think about it - say 100k of those 200k people want to get off the strip at the same time as you. We took the monorail from Harrahs back to MGM and the lines weren't too bad. I suppose staying at the Holiday Inn would be cheaper and the monorail runs til 2AM on that night.

I have pics and video of that night. I'll try and find them and post a few. Have fun!
