Jib 0 #26 December 16, 2007 I've always driven with one (Passport) and it has saved me a lot of money. But, I save a lot more by looking for brake lights and watching for police because laser guns = no advance warning. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. jm951 0 #27 December 16, 2007 Valentine1- sorta like Porsche, there is no substitute. Aside from that glib, but true, answer. The radar detector isn't a magic shield to keep you from getting a ticket. You still have to drive carefully and stay alert. If there's no other traffic around you, don't go much more than 5 over. Even with a V1, laser or instant on will nail you. Drive smart and let somebody else get to the trap first so your radar detector of choice has a chance. One last word, VASCAR has no defense. For those who don't know what it is, it's the old time and distance equation applied to speed traps. John Law will have an observer sitting in an unobtrusive location armed with a stopwatch and with a view of two reference points. All he has to do is time you, a computer spits out the speed, and then he radios ahead. Sometimes there are marks on the road to tip you off that it's a trap area. When you see a horizontal line all the way across the road and another one shortly thereafter, it's a trap area. Best defense, drive carefully and sanely. Goody_23 0 #28 December 16, 2007 I bought myself a nice new radar detector when I got my liscence...However I got caught by the eye in the sky which fucked me over. As the police car on the ground came to pull me over my radar went wild and he saw me hit the breaks....The nice officer gave me 2 options. Put the radar detector under my tire and run over it, or get a ticket worth more than the radar detector itself. So much for my radar days... Jib 0 #29 December 17, 2007 QuoteValentine1- sorta like Porsche, there is no substitute. When Valentine worked for Cincinnati Microwave and designed the Escort and Passport ($295 in 1986), you're right. Instant-on leaked signal about .2 mile away and you could only pick up K about 1/2 mile away. So, others had a ton of false alarms and didn't have the sensitivity. (A Bel got me caught at 90 in 55 zone -- well, almost, all of the wolves in the cahse pack were busy as I went by.) Today, I'm not sure that it makes much of a difference by comparison. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. Bones 0 #30 December 17, 2007 Radar detectors are like AAD's: Get one, but don't rely on it. I've had a V1 (the same one) for 7 years and love it.
mnealtx 0 #31 December 17, 2007 QuoteIt really is just to make sure that I'm not the unlucky guy of the group who gets pulled over. That's at the discretion of the officer...no way to guarantee you won't be "the one". QuoteI can't afford paying $300 on a traffic ticket and a higher car insurance. Then don't speed - problem solved!Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. POPS 9708 , SCR 14706
