Nice Work Mile Hi CO

CO has got the most political quibles os any state/province I've ever seen.... except for Alberta!

You havent been to Vegas, then?

SDLV did a good job at ruining the vibe for any DZ that tried to open here.

Skydive Mesquite is actively working on repairing that vibe by being a politic free dz.

So we either accept what goes on at Mile Hi or we don't jump. Not in Colorado.

Those of you who have more than one dz to choose from, appreciate that freedom.

USPA shows 4 DZ's. Did the other 3 close?

As a practical matter, Sartre's right. There's really only one viable dz to jump from around here.

Maybe for you. I got a cool place in the springs to jump.:D

I always wondered why it is the guys from the Academy come to Longmont and jump.

I asked that same question, back when Calhan was still a fully-functioning DZ. The answer I got at the time was that there were always staff from the Academy around Calhan to keep an eye on them, so they would come up to MHS where they could get a breath of fresh air w/o the scrutiny.

Then one of the Academy staff became part of the MHS staff on the weekends...

You kinda have to live in the Denver area to understand why we say that Mile Hi is the only place to jump.

1. Colorado Skysports - it's a Cessna DZ (more or less) - the King Air kinda crashed, and the Cessna is now crashed. I think they're looking around for another plane, but I don't really jump there, so I don't know the story, and you can take my statements as rumor and speculation. Maybe someone else local can pipe up and say if they're jumping at all these days.

2. Elaborate Skydiving at Calhan - yep, this one is closed. Many of us are sad about that.

3. Mile-Hi Skydiving Center, Inc - well, that's the one that's being discussed. Otter, King Air, Cessna - all turbo.

4. Skydive The Rockies - might as well be in another state. 3-4 hour drive from the Denver area, depending on how fast you drive. Another Cessna DZ that does tandems, and unless you're planning on tenting or hotel for the weekend, and bringing a friend or two, then you're probably going to do a lot of driving and one or two solos.

There just aren't that many full-time jumpers here. Not really enough to support more than one large DZ. Probably enough tandems and regular jumpers to support one large DZ and a few cessna DZs that are several hours drive away. Pretty much all the DZs in Colorado survive on tandems, but there isn't much room for more than one fun-jumper DZ.

My understanding is that they actually have a fee added to their jump ticket prices that put the money into the Memorial fund that this is coming from. The former owners family basically put it as a stipulation that all jumps would have a $1 surcharge that would be added to the fund then then matched by the DZ as part of their terms when the DZ was sold. It was a really sore point for the CO crew for a while since their ticket prices went up and they were all forced into making this "donation" but were not able to write it off of their taxes or anything like that.

Its nice to see a donation like that though.

If the DZO is having to kick in a $1 and the jumpers are kicking in a $1/jump. I wonder if this "contract clause didn't exist if the DZO could reduce his rates by $2/jump.

Whats to say the extra $1/jump is coming out of his pocket.:D:D

Damn Phil you must drive like a grannie. When I lived in southwest Boulder, my commute to SDTR took me roughly 2 hours and 20 minutes and I wasn't driving all that fast. Of course my commute to MH was only 20 minutes from the same Boulder location. So it's a no brainer why I did most of my jumps at the closer DZ. But it was still good to visit SDTR, Calhan and Brush when they were open. Now MH is the place to go and those of us who started jumping at MH during the Jeff Sands era know the DZ is radically different these days.

Oh and despite what I may have said in a similar thread a few years back when this force contribution came into effect, you will NEVER EVER catch me again whining about $22 jumps tickets. Up here in over taxed Canuckville, they charge me on average $30+ per jump to hurl myself out of a Cessna from only 9k maybe 10k and that is if you are lucky enough to even get on the airplane since we all know priority is always given to tandems, tandem cameramen and students.

Canadian. But remember the Canadian looney is worth more than the US greenback these days. It's not the DZs fault. Here in tax happy Canada, we pay more for everything. The DZ expenses are just so much much higher thanks to our socialistic governments who promise free healthcare but let people die on waiting lists since all our doctors and nurses have left the country. But I am getting off topic here. :o

Yes I realize the Canuckian $ is worth more. I was thinking that would be about $50 US, but then remembered I was thinking of the Euro. Just the other day I had to pay for something priced at 9.95 Euros; $15.03 US.

Yes, I do! I ride even slower than I drive, too :)
STR has changed a lot in the last few years as well. Last I was there was for an AFF eval jump with Billy Rhodes and they only had a Cessna doing tandems - no more Caravan.

Because it felt like we were the only ones at calhan (and many times we were), are supposed to only jump at USPA dropzones, and the diffrence in driving to Denver and Canon City isn't a factor since spending the night in Denver has much better opportunities.

...and you and I both know what kind of opportunities he's referring to!!:D:D

No, I'm totally innocent. was he talking about the sushi resturants or maybe the tunnel? I have no idea what opportunities could be had in Denver but if he's talking opportunities to get on the mic and John Denver karaoke night I may skip it.
