bad poker beat

Recommended Posts

i don't get to play poker much, but i usually enjoy it even when i lose. last night i got beat on a hand and i'm still thinking about it. i play for fun and the money is small, but on this one, the amount of money could have been $1 or $100 and it would have burned me just the same. i was big blind and was dealt K, J, offsuit. several people called the big blind but no one raised. i checked and the flop was K, K, J. the small blind bet and i raised. everyone else folded and small blind re-raised. i went all in and got called immediately. we counted our chips before turning our cards over and enjoyed the suspense. he looked deflated when i turned my cards over and said he didn't even think about the boat, he thought i was on a straight draw. he turned over K, A. Anyone who has played or watched a little poker knows what happens next. on the turn comes an A. in an instant i when from having the nuts to being kicked in the nuts. those are the kind of things i love watching on tv, but it sucks when it happens to you. oh well, i guess that makes up for the time i went all in with a 7, 2 offsuit and won with a full house.

He should have thought you were on a king or at least a jack.. Why he would think you were on a str8 draw after going all in from re-raises, i dont understand that mentality......
Still though he had a KA so he played it well, not often people flop a boat. I would not say it was a 'bad beat' , only cause i believe the turn is a very important card to see before making big desicions. At the same time though, I can imagine that deflating feeling you would have felt. Huge blow to a hand that feels perfect.

I was in a cash game at casino a while back, had pocket aces. I did not re-raise, flop was AJA. SO here I am with quads trying to keep calm and have two other people betting and raising before me. The flop also bought out a possible flush draw, possible str8 draw.
Turn came and was a king, same suit as AJ. I bet a little hoping this guy made his flush draw, he then went all in and i put him on flush or str8 draw. River was 10, same suit. He pulled out a Queen, same suit. He had the serious nuts, royal flush.... I had quads... He had a 300 and something pot.

ok, you got me beat on the bad beat. to understand the decisions made, you have to realize that the buy in is only $10 and there is usually more drinking and bullshitting than playing. we really just play to have a good time. the guy who beat me had quite the buzz going on. one time his wife called her hand a straight, not noticing that all the cards were also the same suit (a straight was enough to win the pot anyway).

i decided to go all in when i did because the last few times i've played, i've gotted my ass royally kicked on the turn and the river. i've just had better luck when i've bet everyone out and taken a smaller pot when i have the top hand early. i'm playing for fun and not to win a lot of money, but still its not much fun to continually lose. the time before last when we played, i bought back in 3 time and didn't win a single hand all night. i would have a very strong hand and people would stay with me with nothing and end up beating me on the river.

I had almost the same thing happen to me 2 weeks ago. I was playing 1/2 live and had about $560 in front of me. I picked up JJ on the button with about five limpers. I raise to $20 and get one caller. Flop is QQJ He stares me down and then checks. I think he hit something so I bet out $40 and he goes all in for $495 WTF. I call and flips over AQ and hits Quads on the turn. The only thing that gets me about this is if he wasn't such a bad player and make a bet 6x the pot in a deepstack game. I would have seen the turn and been able to get off the hand. But so goes the game.

I've had a straight flush and gotten beat by a royal flush. I've also had quads and gotten beat by higher quads. I've flopped straights, flushes, full houses, etc and gotten beat even after going all-in before the turn.

There are always going to be donkeys who think their hand is better or just want to see what happens and they luck out.

You just hope you have more chips than they do before that hand so you're still alive after the bad beat. [:/]
