Pregnancy and pills

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine is having his 2nd kid here soon. His wife is still taking her antianxiety pills.
She's been taking them all the while she's been nursing their first born.

I hate the idea of people messing with their own chemistry, let alone their kids'. They say it's all safe and happy, but how much do they really know about these new drugs they dope out to everyone these days.

With ANY medicine, ALWAYS weigh the benefits over the risks.

How badly does she need it? Can she not function without help? Is she anxious/depressed to the point of self harm or harm to the children? Or does she just like "a little something to calm the nerves"?

Risks really depends on what the medication is - what is the concentration that is present in the breastmilk (which includes factoring of the fat content and solubility), whether she would pass the active metabolite or a breakdown product, and what the size of the active molecule is (larger compounds wont cross the placenta)

Hopefully her dr's know that she's pregnant and their using something older (like buspar) with a known side effect profile and not the newer medicines where .... we really don't know everything about them
