AggieDave 6 #6 March 18, 2008 Quote(dave sez) >Where does the electricity come from (for the most part)? Around here, mostly natural gas. And where does that natural gas come from? All in all I have nothing against electric cars, but I just see it as an even trade with our current electricity generating systems in use. Things are changing in that regard, but its a slow process. Bill you're probably one of the few people that I know who could have a 100% electric car that didn't take any sort of non-renewable resource to charge. Less then one tenth of 1% of the worlds population must be like you.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Well: 1) Using natural gas to make electricity at a combined-cycle power plant, transmitting the power to your car, charging batteries and then using that to get you around is between 2 and 2.5 times as efficient than just using the natural gas to move your car. (Although the only car that can use natural gas directly is the Honda Civic GX.) 2) Since people will generally charge at night, it won't require a significant increase in generation capability. 3) This car can run on either electricity (via charging) or by running an IC engine (like a regular hybrid.) So you have a choice there. Having such flexibility will be important as energy prices rise.
AggieDave 6 #8 March 18, 2008 I wanting the simple answer that natural gas is another fossil fuel and still doesn't solve the overall problem. Then I was referencing your solar panel setup at your house. --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
