During the months of September and December, people can swim as close as possible to the edge of the falls without falling over!

When I was a kid, we went camping all over the southeast US.

We went to one place that had a dam above the swimming area. The water came out of the dam and ran at a slow decline across some smooth rocks. Probably a foot deep. If you sat on your hands and feet, it would push you along until it tumbled into deeper water.

You got out after you landed in the deep pool because, after about a mile, the river went over a waterfall.
I doubt you can do that anymore.

My sisters and I spent entire days sliding down that spot.

Either Fall Creek Falls or High Falls. Can't remember where exactly.

Cool, I just got a nice little rush of vertigo from looking at those pictures... which is fun when I'm in a situation where I can't actually get hurt. Not sure if I'd be able to go to the edge there, but maybe...

There is also a place called Tallulah Gorge in Georgia.

Karl Wallenda crossed a section in 1970.
You can get right up to the edge and it is 600 ft straight down.

When I went to Niagra Falls, I remember leaning over the railing and looking over the edge, thinking how great it would be to get even closer to the edge. It's almost hypnotizing.
