Car cigarette lighter plug thingys

Recommended Posts

When was the last time you saw ANYONE use the cigarette lighter in their car? I know I know, I'm sure I'll hear a barrage of DZ.commers who still use theirs.

My point: why are we still using this as the standard for DC jacks for all our portable plug-in stuff? Yeah, it made sense in 1976, but nowadays it's a wee bit dated. Anymore, the things we're plugging in are smaller than the damn jack. Can't we come up with a more appropriately sized jack?

Yeah, I know it's cool that the fuse is built-in. I don't care.

Just a thought...

Frankly, I'd like to see all the cheesy buttons and switches, replaced with big ol' fashioned and reliable, two-bladed knife-switches.

In 5 years, we'll be doing push-button automatics again.
It's just a style.

Of course, gauges instead of idiot lights would be nice.

Is that a '72 in the pic?

My dream is a 69' Chevelle SS, convertable...painted chevy orange with black racing stripes. See the attached.

That one was sitting in a carpark/barn in Maine. Didn't get to stop and look closely...just had time for a quick drive-by pic. Judging by the curves of the car though, I would guess early 70's.

Now I've got flashbacks of my aunt's '73 Mustang. I might need to be excused...

Before I sold my truck I used the lighter practically every day. It works like a champ. Besides, have you ever tried to light a match while you're driving, talking on your cellphone, changing a CD AND trying to eat breakfast while going 90mph on the freeway?

;)

At least you weren't trying to read the newspaper at the same time... I hate people who read while driving... :D:D

For the OP.... everything we have that's mobile has a plug to fit that power point, consider the cost of changing everything from radar detectors to laptops over to use a different power supply...

I want to know who the idiot was who put the lighters in the backseats, back in the day. My brother burned me with one of those lighters when Mom wasn't looking! >:(

They have become the de facto standard for DC power, unfortunately. They are quite unsuited for that role. The closest standard I can think of that would replace it would be an AC outlet; inverters are dirt cheap nowadays.

I want to know who put those flip-up seats in the backs of station wagons. The ones that face backwards.
As a 6 yo, you are watching other drivers race towards you and then slam on the brakes at the last moment.
Mildly traumatic event that gets repeat 3 times a mile.

I like the cig plugs for my 500K candle power searchlight. Instant daylight. All kinds of uses.

My mom told me that if you push that in when the car is not running the car could blow up. I believe her for many a year until someone was like WTF you talkin about?

It was then I realized I had been givin a scare story so i wouldn't play with the lighter when mom was out of the car.

It worked.

You just didn't have one big enough. One guy I used to work with had a microwave in the back of the work van. Wasn't running that one off the cigarette lighter.
Also done margaritas on the beach with one.
