Alien 'shrooms!

Recommended Posts

There're 4 of these things in various stages growing on the farm where I stay - Western Cape, SA. I've been living in the area for 12+ years now & have never seen one in all my hiking around here.

They look like a very short-stemmed mushroom before they start to split open & the webby thingy emerges. It feels like soft cartilage with a very slimy coating.

Not sure I want to be the first to taste, but I can freeze a bit & send it to you to try :P

A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!

They are Latticework or cage fungi.

Thanks for identifying those. I spend a lot of time in the woods, but I've never run across those strange things before.

Attached: some pretty little mushrooms I spied on a recent hike in Florida.

This site has lots of mushroom/fungi. It is also organized so you can try to identify them.

As does this one

If you are intested in mushrooms pick up a field guide so you can identify them on your hikes.

Nice web sites. Thanks for those references.

Gosh, I've already got so many field guides that I can't carry them all in my pack: animal tracks, plants, edibles...

I like to see them condensed down to laminated pamphlets, targeted for a specific region to make them smaller. There are a few places that sell such things.
