Jacuzzi bath motor issues

Does anyone know anything about why a jacuzzi bath pump will only be making a humming noise?

Also what is the longish round cannister thing on the motor that has two wires running to it.

I can move the propeller with my hand freeley if that helps with the issue.

The motor just makes a humming noise for a few minutes then stops and restarts 30 odd seconds later. The motor gets very hot as well but nothing apart from that seems to be working.

Any help would be much appreciated.

All those romantic candle light nights in the jacuzzi have finally put paid to the pump

Just kidding, I have first hand experience with candle wax an Jacuzzis,
some people put candles round the edge of the tub, the wax falls into the water an gets recycled through the
pump but the wax doesn't, hence (at the worst burnt out motor or the motor hasent the guts to turn
the pump with all the grunge ((wax)) or it might just be a case of changing the capacitor on the motor.

The capacitor gives the motor the initial ummpf to start it spinning.

Reading your post again sounds like the windings are f**ked

Are you shure the turbine (pump) and the shaft of the motor turn freely.

Yeah it turns freely. how do i know if the capacitator is fucked?

First short out the capacitor, use a screwdriver with a good insulated handle an touch both wires at the same time to the shaft of the screwdriver,
you'll probably hear a crack an see a small flash as it shorts out, If you don't do this you'll get a belt (shock) off the wires
With a Volt OHM meter (set to Rx1)
With wires off of the capacitor ( write down where they go first! )...touch the cap terminals ( red lead on left and black lead on right )...
the needle should move away from the infinity and move slightly and go back to infinity...reverse leads and ( red lead on right side and black lead on the left side ) on the cap and the needle should move away from infinity even further and then go back to infinity = a good capacitor

If this was recently installed, make sure that the voltage is correct, there are 110v motors, 220v motors, and most motors support BOTH, however you need to remove a pannel and change some wires to indicate what your input voltage is.

Second, check the voltage on its way to the motor and make sure it's what you're expecting. A few poorly designed systems will change from 220 to 110 when a relay goes bad in the control box... If the motor is only getting half the power it needs it would explain the buzz. Relays are ussually only $15 to replace and can be shipped overnight in most places.
