Recommended Posts

the little white boxes for google, craigs list, ebay, etc. alway pop up with stuff from past searches when typing something in. sometimes my mom uses my computer and i don't need her seeing what kind of porn i google. can i set something so that the info doesn't get saved? i have ie and xp btw.

that doesn't delete everything. even after deleting history and all offline content, there is still a list of past searches when i click the little white search box in google. i can then delete all of those searches manually, but if i go to something else such as craigs list, stuff that my wife or i have previously googled that i though had been deleted will pop up.

On IE7,

Tools --> Internet Options

Under Browsing History, click Delete. From there, you will probably want to delete your history and your form data.

If you want IE to never remember what you type in forms, go to the Content tab and click Settings under AutoComplete. Uncheck forms and google won't remember your previous searches.

I would also suggest checking out Firefox. One useful feature is you can set it to clear your forms whenever you close the browser. This way it'll still remember them for your current session (which is handy) and you don't have to remember to clear them when you're done.

Use Safari's (or, alternately, Demeter's if you're on a Mac) Private Browsing feature, and none of that stuff is even saved. It's not bulletproof against knowledgeable people actively searching for your browsing history, but it works quite well for the purpose you described.

C[rap] Cleaner

Just be sure to read the directions, but if you don't, be sure that you don't tick off any of the options under "Advanced."

You should use this in addition to the privacy options afforded by your browser.

There are other programs that also serve this function, and some of them are quite good, but CCleaner is probably the most thorough while still being safe for the average PC user.

Edited to add: Okay, I see someone already mentioned this, so you may consider my post an endorsement of that post.

This doesn't apply to what your are trying to erase but also know that anything deleted off your hard drive is still there for any data recovery tool to retrieve.

IIRC, CCleaner can mil-wipe slack and unused area on the disk. If not, there's plenty of freeware out there that can, as well.
