New Navy Uniforms So much for tradition. The Navy says it is changing the standard white hat and bell bottom trousers for its enlisted personnel to a khaki option for those from E-1 to E-6 (Seaman Apprentice to First Class Petty Officers) that was once reserved strictly for chief petty officers and officers. Also note that just about everybody in the Navy now gets wings of some sort, once reserved exclusively for pilots. In the photo, Yeoman 1st Class Erin Morgan (who has her own wings) stands at attention as she models the khaki option of the year-round concept service uniform. Command Master Chief Robert B. Carroll, director of Task Force Uniform, made the presentation of khaki and gray uniform options at Naval Medical Center San Diego, Calif., and says the uniforms were developed from a response to the fleet s feedback on current uniforms. The new E1-E6 Service Uniform (SU) were available for purchase in Great Lakes and California Navy Exchanges on July 31. The SU is for year-round wear and replaces the summer white and winter blue uniforms. It is authorized to be worn for office work, watchstanding, liberty or business ashore when prescribed as the uniform of the day. Over 500 Sailors participated in a six-month wear-test, evaluating four diverse uniform concepts, designs and colors, said Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Mark Ferguson. Overwhelmingly, the approved SU design was selected above the other three. Sailors will have up to 24 months to purchase the new uniform, depending on their duty station location. The mandatory wear date for all E1-E6 personnel is July 2010. Clothing replacement allowances for fiscal years 2008 and 2009 were increased to cover the purchasing of two sets of new uniforms by July 2010. Basic SU components include a short-sleeved khaki shirt for males and a short sleeved khaki overblouse for females; black trousers with black belt and silver buckle for males and black beltless slacks for females. Collar insignia consists of miniature silver anodized metal rank insignia for E2-E6. Petty officers will wear large silver anodized metal rank insignia on their garrison cap. Males must wear a white undershirt. Optional components include a black, Eisenhower-style jacket with epaulets, black pullover v-neck sweater and black skirt, beret and handbag for females. Now, I see no problem with building morale among enlisted. That's fine with me. But building morale by stripping down the meaning of the accomplishments of others is, to me, losing one point while making another. I can see streamlining uniforms. But how about keeping the greens (which everyone has) instead of losing them? Perhaps it has a bit to do with contracting uniforms. p.s. -- Mike - there have been some changes, of course. I see big changes between tactical uniforms (woodland BDU's are pretty useless in Iraq) and garrison uniforms. My wife is hotter than your wife. I remember being somewhat critical of the move to the black beret. I remember being critical of a number of changes to the service. Mainly, I recall being pretty critical of the Army. My last unit was on Camp Pendleton, and those Marines were squared away and put us Army guys to shame in a number of ways. Then again, my company was low-drag with tactical trucking by the time I left. Damn. I don't miss the job or the uniform one bit. But I sure miss those troops... My wife is hotter than your wife. As a matter of fact, there is a pretty extensive qualification syllabus you must complete before you can go before a certification board. The surface and subsurface guys have their own insignias. matthewcline 0 #20 August 23, 2008 My new job has me trying to keep up with the many uniform changes ALL services are going through right now.The Army is of course going all ACU for Tactical wear and most daily activities. The new Dress uniform is an effort to stream line the amount of clothing needed for occasions beyond the dirty work and to reduce cost for the Soldier (Lou D, both the Male and Female Versions put the patch in a simular spot look for the 101st Patch on the males Right Pocket, but yeah Glorified Cook is accurate). The Marines have done a few chnges during the last five/six years and spurred the current digital fad for the tactical uniforms. The Navy is making changes designed to cut 9 uniform choices to 3, saving money for the indiviual sailor. A slight step backwards was the NWU, they ended up with three versions of it, Blue Digital, Tan Digital and Green Digital. The Blue is for all sailors and the Tan and Green for those who may go a shore in some sort of Land Warfare role (Coprsmen, SEALS, UDT, SEA BEE etc), but over all a step in cost reduction for the Sailors. The Air Force has adopted a new tactical uniform and dress uniform as well. The new Digital Tiger Strip looks cool but is not doing well in the filed (much like the ACU). Funny thing is that all four Services took the Tactial Pattern than did not finish the highest in testing. Multi Cam beat all four of the currently adopted patterns for function in the field. Uniform design is just a matter of placing pockets, buttons, zippers and snaps etc in the right spot. I know that in the Army all we in the field asked for was the ability to modify our uniforms like SF but keep the DCU and Woodland Pattern as they happened to be pretty good and unifrom suppliers met that demand in days! The badges and wings are still dearned, but maybe the definition of "earned" has been broadened.Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! The wings YN1(AW) Morgan has on her uniform are the aviation enlisted specialist wings - not an easy thing to obtain and certainly not handed out like candy. They've been around for quite some time - this fellow hasn't been around the fleet very much. Perhaps he should do some research prior to writing another article. Not really sure his comments about the trials being in medical in San Diego are correct either - when I was over at the clinic a few weeks ago I didn't see anything new.
