help changing a hard drive

go do I get all my thunderbird emails from my old hard drive to my new hard drive?
Also, when you delete stuff on a computer like personal records etc, I hear people say you can never actually fully delete anything from your computer. Where does it actually get stored? Is it on the hard drive or some other part of the computer?

Oh, for the emails, I am changing my os as well from xp to vista. Will this make a difference?

can you do that with two different opperating systems? Xp and vista?

Yes, because only 1 operating system is running at a time and you are only copying files..... provided that the file systems are compatible (which it is because you are using M$ stuff).
