Old-Time Skydiver when......

Bazillions!

I know it was easier back "In The Day...."

the stadiums MUST have been bigger 'cause
there are people missing them on SQUARES now!

I SOOOOOOO do not get that....I can see landing out on these screwy loads on a normal day of jumping where there are 10 "groups" going out of an otter... but SHIT... for a Demo......WTF

We did a retro day a couple years ago....jumping the T-10's with 7 TU cuts.. I spotted the load and tosssed a wind drift indicatior... I landed 25' from dead center... only one other person beat me.. he landed right on it.. same canopy but he weighed like half what I do. Those things do come down a tad harder than I seem to remember from 30 years ago.

YOU KNOW YOU'RE AN OLD-TIME SKYDIVER WHEN....

..."Pullin' your "BLAST HANDLE" had nothing to
do with Killin' Kittens!
:$

...Gave up all asperations of ever placing in a
Para-Ski competition because Clay Scholepe,
after Dead Centering out...BEAT the course
'standard' set by Billy Kidd...
:(

...Ever "Proped" a 182 while wearing rig!
B|

...Ever had to tell the Pilot to 'lock the brakes'
putting a student out.

...looked ahead to when you'ld have enough jumps
to start "Slingin' the Reserve" like the big boys.
:)

...Thought the whine of the stall horn going
for 500' was 'normal'.
:S

...You went back to using ski goggles because
those new fangled "Jockey Goggles" just couldn't
stand up to use during downwind landings.
B|

...Ya knew the ~Length, Width, Weight and how
to actually Use and Read a WDI.
Rainy days were when you broke out 'BIG' roll
and made a pile of your own.
(Para-Gear sells 'em pre-made....? ....WHY!?)
:D

...You always had a roll of rip-stop tape in your gear bag to patch the patch on the patch from the
"Rings & Ropes" burn holes.
[:/]

..."Gear up grade" was going from a 4pin to a 3pin
container...and the 'saftey mod' was pullin' the
cones and using loops.
B|

...You pulled the fishing sinkers off your rip cord,
and replaced 'em with rubber bands for "SAFTEY"
reasons...
:o

...Finding little round pebbles in your jean pockets
brings a smile to your face!
B|

...you only had one jumpsuit, 'cause you only
NEEDED one jumpsuit...!

You knew who Lowell Bachman is and could call
him at home on Thursday night because you forgot
you lost your rip-cord Last Sunday...and ya wanna jump THIS Sunday....and then you DO!
B|;)B|

...Got a cold chill every time you hear the three
words..."Green Star Express"
B|

...Remember wondering why the USPA membership
cards went from White to "PINK"!?
AND...feeling 'naked' for a week when sending
your ratings in for the 'stamp'.
:|

...Knew why 'some guys' had a hammer, riggers seal & a nickel in their gear bag.;)

It's all an Alien Plot I tell you!

They're makin' the stadiums smaller...they added more gravity...and somehow-
they've found a way to make the 'extra' holes
at the end of my pants belt DISAPPEAR
:o

WERE ALL DOOMED!:P

We a) knew how to spot, and, b) knew how to make an accurate WDI out of half a package of crepe paper and some welding rods for weight. Jeez ... you kids these days ...

Might wanna re-read the thread title wartload...

'cause I know how TOO!;)
...and didn't use a 'package' of the paper...
we had the 2000' ROLL. Cut them to length on
the packing table.:)

In fact...we couldn't use welding rods...they would
foul up the farm machinery where we jumped.

So I always had to pour sand into paper soda straws
and use those...!

Yeah ... I read the thread title. The point is that they didn't always sell those nice big rolls of paper just for making WDIs, but the "Five and Dime" store sold packs of it for decorating the high school gym, etc. You bought a pack, cut it across the middle (width) with a box knife, and that would give you the material to make two WDIs. As for farm machinery, our agreement with our local DFDZO (Dairy Farm Dropzone Owner who also often provided the welding rods) was that we'd retrieve our WDIs unless they landed in the trees. He wasn't so worried about the farm machinery as the cows trying to eat them. Besides, it gave bored students and the kids of jumpers something to do. To keep on the thread, though, maybe we should add:
-- Made jumps when "shooting accuracy" meant avoiding the cow pies
-- Remember when the closest thing to someone keeping a manifest at most DZs was, "Hey ... anyone besides me packed yet?"

Just discovered this thread.

I think I kinda qualify as an oldie. SCR 442, SCR 202, 4-stack 870, CCR 1830.

Jumped with Newell; met Istel; was flown by Sanborn at the '71 nationals in Tahlequah.

My first reserve ride was on a non-steerable 24-foot round.

I read some of the posts on dropzone.com and am in absolute wonderment that there are so many wussies.
