Twoply 0 #1 October 29, 2008 I have this virus on my PC and I cant get rid of it. I tried Symantic and access is denied and it wont let me quarantine it. I tried restarting windows in safe mode, locate it and delete it, but it still won't let me. It says it is currently being used by other programs and blah blah. I googled it and nothing. I'm ready to format and reload windows, but it's thats a pain. Sugestions?

PhreeZone 15 #3 October 29, 2008 Try Trends Housecall and scan the system. I think its housecall.trendmicro.com They keep the scanner updated every 4-5 hours. McAfee has Stinger that may help, it only detects the larger spreading things. http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exeYesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

Shawndiver 0 #5 October 29, 2008 If you have located the files associated with the virus but cannot delete them because they are in use even in safe mode, then you can try booting off a disc OS (I use ERD Commander) locating them in the host file system and then delete them. Hard for them to be in use is you are using a completely differnent OS! Problem is, if you don't get all of it, (registry, etc.) it might come right back! Good luck._________________
pinkfairy 0 #6 October 29, 2008 You could also try Spybot search and destroy from safer-networking.org, it removes a lot of malware, especially effective against false anti virus software that you can't get rid of. It is worth knowing that there are hundreds of false anti virus and anti spyware programs out there, that are actually often spyware themselves, so don't just search and download the first you find, use recommendations from sources that you know (a friend who knows about computers, or a computer magazine) I am of course trustworthy, but you don't know me. I use only ad-aware, SS&D and Trend (which is a paid for version). I have to say that I really like the newest release of trend, it removes a lot of problems that earlier versions didn't, and the house call is not bad either. A reformat will also cure the problem, just make sure that you have at least a network card driver so you can access the internet and download the rest of the drivers. This is not usually a problem with older PCs with a 100 Mb network card. The PC will often be faster and better after the reformat. How long it takes to put back your data from your backup depends on how much data you have. Good luck! Relax, you can die if you mess up, but it will probably not be by bullet. BikerBabe 0 #12 October 29, 2008 what's the name of the virus? I somehow picked up a nasty one called "vundo"...liked to block ALL anti-virus and computer help websites, put random icons on my desktop, and open a "phantom" version of internet explorer that ran in the background constantly, and i couldn't shut it down. I had to download 3 different AV and spyware programs on a DIFFERENT computer, mail them to myself, and get them onto my machine that way. Anyway, do a google search on your symptoms, there are lots out there!Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! Twoply 0 #13 October 29, 2008 The file name is __c00CADC8.dat Virus name : Trojan horse And no, it doesnt say anything about "end program error," just that it is unable to quarantine or erase it.
PhreeZone 15 #14 October 30, 2008 That is not the name of the virus, Trojan Horse is the type of infection method. Run HouseCall or Stinger. If neither of those find anything hit me up on PM, I can walk you through cleaning or collecting samples of the files to get them to the AV vendor to use to enhance their detections to auto remove it in the future. If you want to see what vendors are calling the detection or if they view it as malware submit it to VirusTotal.com, they will spit back a list of the names the various companies are using for it. Vundo isn't bad, the infection of it makes it harder to remove since it tends to infect the AV programs first (better AV has self-protect to prevent this) and then alters the Hosts file to redirect all attempts to go to the AV sites but the actual detection of it and its variants are not that hard to pick up. Sality and some of its variants... that is a whole different ball game to find samples of it to break apart.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
