Does Anyone Buy Themselves A Christmas Present?

Recommended Posts

I always buy myself a Christmas gift. I even wrap it up and put it under the tree. That way I'm guaranteed to get at least one thing I wanted! :D

If you can't laugh at yourself, I'll be happy to do it for you.

I can't do that, cause then someone will ask who's it from....I just get it and don't say nothin'

Oh hell, I even put a card on it saying to me from me. It's the most extravagantly wrapped gift under the tree. No one has to ask who it's from. Only once has anyone said anything - an in-law - snarky about it. I replied with "Well if you people actually got me something I wanted or needed or even decent and useful then I wouldn't have to buy my own gifts."

Now it's just one more of my little Christmas quirks that everyone has come to expect.

Almost always. :)

because they know they're not going to get that from anyone else?

Not at all. I prefer others not buy me gifts. For a long time now my family has not exchanged gifts with the exception of once in a while for no obligatory reason.

Bill and I usually just do stockings (fun, little stuff) and occassionally an additional gift or more often something for the both of us. (Last year we "bought each other" new golf clubs...in October. :P)

I'd like that! I've actually said something along those lines to my ex-sis-in-laws. Nosy bunch of M..f'ers!

Usually my list for me has wool socks and M&M's on it.

:D

That reminds me of Bill's Tita (SO cute!)--before she passed--she always just gave him a nice, thick pair of socks with a piece of candy and a wad of cash stuffed inside them. B|:P

This year I will for sure buy myself 1 or 2 things that I want due to the fact that my mom passed away recently and my dad is just too lazy and doesn't care about shopping. So if I want something, I'll just have to get it myself! My mom used to take me shopping and let me pick out some things I wanted for Xmas.
This will be my first Xmas home in 2 years and w/o my mom, I'm going to make sure it's a good one for everyone in my family!

Sounds like a perfect gift. :)
Really, I'm tired of all the frantic consumerism and commercialism around Christmas. It should be a time of Peace, harmony, and family. Instead it has become a time of stress, waste, and greed. :S

I find it crazy that so much of our economy is built on people buying useless crap for each other in December. :S

All the time:)
Xmas and my birthday are 5 months apart to it's a late birthday present or and early Christmas present

One of the (few) upsides to being single, I can have anything I want, it was really nice to go buy a new motorcycle and answer to no one :D and that wingsuit the other day was pretty great too :)

I agree!

Going sans gift was the best thing we did for one another in so many ways.

It was SO much more fun the first Christmas we just got together and so on.

I mean, with kids, it's different. Beyond that, it's so sad to cheapen what the occasion really is about.

I'm biased a bit because my father once told me--not too long after I started supporting myself--something along the lines of not buying him shit if I hadn't paid my bills and put money into savings else he'd be greatly disappointed. He said it with more charisma & wisdom than I just did. :$:P I understood the message and still do.

I agree. Kids and spouse as far as getting gifts. The rest of the family should just buy one present and play "dirty santa"...That would be fun. Of course without the sexual gifts( wouldn't like the thought of what certain relatives are going to do with that kind of gift) :S

I agree. The amount of presents under my Dad's 13' tree every year is disgusting and it's worse at my husband's parent's. I've been trying to get everyone to cut back for years, but finally the economics of this year is forcing the issue. I think we'll be drawing names and the kids will get the bulk of the gifts.

To make the evening still fun (we celebrate on Christmas Eve), we talked about playing a family version of Survivor with silly games. We just want to vote each other out! While others will be singing and going to church, my family will be drinking and scheming. We have a twisted sense of humor.
