Having your tonsils out as an adult - how painful is it really?

Recommended Posts

I had mine out a month before I started medical school. It took me two weeks to recover. Be careful with what beverages you drink. Not having tonsils to prevent regurgitation, you may end up with milk up your nose. The smell lasts for days. [:/]

Peej, it is probly different for everyone, but 7 up let it bubble in your throat, banana popsicles, jello soup or broth. It itches like a bitch it'll be about a week to a week and 1/2 of discomfort in the throat. -Talking-use a pen and paper, prepare yourself for no phone usage for about 1 1/2 weeks. Its okay Peej, my mom says it is the longest time I was ever quiet, and she was soooo happy until it wore off:D:D:D-Caress

I've learned.... That being kind is more important than being
right.

So after 28 years of bliss the relationship with my tonsils has finally gone south and we've decided to part ways. They've always dreamed of making it as a comedy act in Vegas and me, well i'm happy right where i am. So instead of standing in their way i've conceded to their wishes and they are being cut out of me on Tuesday.

So in all seriousness, how much pain and what kind of recovery am i looking at here? I'm only seeing the Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist who'll do the surgery on Monday so i can't ask him and the suspense is killing me! (I'm 28 if that makes any difference)

Thanks :)

Have no idea, but thanks for taking one for the team..... Oh, from I heard, they no longer give ice cream (due to budgetary cut-backs, your insurance company won't cover it)

I left my tonsils in Pretoria at age 21 , drink lots of coke after and as you wont be able to eat solids for a few weeks youll need a stash of diet shakes lol
But you wont regret it after the holes heal up.

BTW UK and Australia wont remove tonsils in adults anymore.

That's cause we're not pussy wimps that need vibes on the Internet for our tonsillectomy :ph34r::ph34r::ph34r:

well, after reading this thread i guess it all depends on your pain tolerance. i had mine out right after high school and it was awful. not trying to scare you...just being honest. it was definitely some of the worst pain i've been in.

also, your doctors aren't kidding when they warn you about stitches breaking. mine did, and when i got into the doc's office i was bleeding SO badly. he pulled out this huge needle and told me he had to inject my throat to stop the bleeding...so he was going to have to stick this long ass needle in my mouth and down my throat. i fainted right then and there. :D

you'll be fine, i'm sure. its different for everyone.

Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!

It hurts A LOT.. but after that youll be all good for deepthroating.

Anything else I can do for you ?

Uuuuuuuhm, pretty sure that about covers it, thanks :D

Unless you have a specific flavoured lube that i might look into for said deepthroating?

i had mine out a couple years ago (at 42). while they were at it, the also removed my uvula (sp? that little hangy ball thing at the back of your throat) and some of the flappy thing that keep stuff from going up your nose.

hurt like a bastard, but once i figured out they'd give me pain meds pretty much whenever i asked, it was better. after a week or so it was just a sore throat.

lost almost 20 pounds too! found it again later though.
