travrois 0 #1 November 27, 2008 Hi Guys, I'm working on a script that involves skydiving and I'm having trouble developing character arcs for certain plotlines. I'm totally amateur, young and I'm just doing this as a spec script to be sent out to agents and not necessarily ever "picked up" -- so the pay is nothing. But I would really appreciate it if someone would kindly be available to me to ask questions about certain scenarios I'm not familiar with. Input just means that I would email you back and forth periodically, no big deal really. So if you are interesting (and aren't all jumpers?) and you have interesting stories to tell, please let me hear about them. I'm especially looking for information/stories pertaining to FreeFlying Teams (or any team really, but the script is based on freeflyers), especially their politics, their dynamics and rivalries amongst teammates or other teams. Yea, it's almost winter and I'm really bored and missing my DZ. Any inspiration is appreciated! Regards, Erinn
Hipwrddude 0 #2 November 27, 2008 Consider getting Final Draft screenwriting software. I recommend getting grounded in the craft. One of my favorites is Irwin Blacker's "The Elements of Screenwriting." Syd Field's "Screenplay" is also solid. One of the challenges of doing a script on skydiving is that it's an intrinsically dramatic experience but, unfortunately, difficult to sustain/convey on the big screen to non-skydivers. That's not saying it can't be done with a degree of creativity, a great conflict and interesting characters, but a challenge nonetheless. Do you have a basic plotline to expound upon or is that your hook that you don't want to expose? You're always the starter in your own life!
SuFantasma 0 #3 November 27, 2008 Just start reading the Bonfire posts from today backwards, all of them... keep notes of the poster... You should NO problems developing characters.... plenty of them... all kinds of them .... The only decision you will have left is : am I writing a comedy, drama, horror, love or xyz plot?Y yo, pa' vivir con miedo, prefiero morir sonriendo, con el recuerdo vivo". - Ruben Blades, "Adan Garcia"
Pokerstar 0 #4 November 27, 2008 I'm doing my AFF at Skydive the Farm in January, and hopefully going for my A license while there. How can I help?Fortunately, I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug, uh, regimen to keep my mind, you know, uh, limber. --- The Dude ---
travrois 0 #5 November 29, 2008 I'm in the very early phases, mostly character development. I'm finding it easy to come up with stories in situations either I've experienced or been privy too. It's difficult to say what the plot line is, basically you're following a series of characters on a dropzone. Some story lines include romance (ug, of course), rivalry, decisions. It's too early to say the entire script now but I'd like some specific Team Drama stories, or do all of you get along really well? I guess that's possible, but doesn't make for good drama. It's looking like an hour long dramedy. I'm really just flushing out plots and characters now. It's going to take a long time. Seriously, any skydiving team drama worth sharing? I'd be really curious to hear about it. Thanks for all your kind suggestions.

I mean, I see you have the jumps so I would assume so, but holy crap, if there have ever been drama queens it has to be in 4-way.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

AggieDave 6 #10 November 30, 2008 Quote holy crap, if there have ever been drama queens it has to be in 4-way. That's one of the reasons why I'm a swooper. Its me and the course. Period. If Windmiller pulls another great run out of now where, its ok, there's not a thing I can do about it. Its still just me and the course. I have no team mates to miss a grip. I have no camera guy to pull out of frame. I have me and the course. I win every meet I win and I lose every meet I've lost. I am responsible for my performance and placing alone. I didn't even crack the top 25 this year. That was totally me. No one else caused me to zero those runs. No one else caused the vertical on my last distance run. No one else caused me to set up way too deep on that zone-acc run. It was me. No bullshit drama. Just a cheer for my friends, a smile on my face and a blue camping cup with JD in it!--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
