Can't connect old computer to the internet

Recommended Posts

And by old I mean 2 years. This was my top of the line desktop work station and I thought that I SHOULD be able to just hook it up and go.. Running on Windows 2000 Professional and Internet Explorer . I've checked the cable and modem and they work on the rest of my comps. I've got through several setup wizards to get the connection going and can't get any websites to come up. If the version of Explorer is the issue then I can't figure out how to update that. Any suggestions?

Go to the command line and then type ipconfig

That will give you the IP and gateway. Make sure there is not a static IP assigned to the network card and also look to see that TCP is an enabled protocol on that card by right clicking "My Network" and then going into properties.

All I'm getting is "windows 2000 IP Configuration"

It's trying to connect through my old work VPN connection program or a dial-up connection even though I've run through an LAN setup.

I pinged my router "ping 168.192.0.0" and it gave me "destination host unreachable".

I've set up two comps and two laptops in this house. What kind of DFU error is this...

For some reason I'm running off of the F: instead of C:. I think it's something I did when I added another drive back in the day but hey, it worked then.

Edit: Oh man, it was just up. Then gone.

Several things you can do here.
A Try the ipconfig /all - and please post what it says.

You can try ping 127.0.0.1 to ping your nic card and see if it returns. If not then the problem is with your nic card.

Try a different cable, maybe using a crossover cable instead of a lan cable.

By running the network setup wizard you probably have several conflicting networks now. Check control panel / network connections and see how many connections there are. You should have 1394 connection and local area connection, nothing more. If it keeps trying to default to the dialup vpn connection it will be listed here. Simply delete it or disable it.

Try ipconfig /release - ipconfig /renew

If possible update the winsock to a newer version.

You can also try some netsh commands in the cmd, there are several..

You can also try to reset the ipstack
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt (in cmd)

Also check the properties of the connection to see if TCP/IP is listed in the protocols. If so go toproperties and make sure "Obtain ip address auto" is selected and make sure "Obtain dns server address" is selected.

If tcp/ip is not shown just click install a new protocol and select it from the list.

Last but not least check the pc for malwalre if possible. Download avast or avg and burn to a cd on other pc then install on the one that does not work.

I would also get into the cmos (f8) on boot and re-arrange the boot order if it runs off F instead of C but that also depends on what drive the OS is on. (you don't want the os to be on a slave drive and boot up later than the others)

Hope some of this helped

Host name......: none-w8uizxtdns
Primary DS Suffix:...ktagroup.com
Node Type.....: Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled.....: No
WINS Proxy Enabled....: No

Looks like it trying to read through my work (ktagroup) VPN connection.

I got replies so that's OK.

I just tried the same cable on a different comp and it's OK.

I have neither of those. (plot thickens)

Is your EULA expired with that particular OS?

I guess that's always possible. This comp was set up to with all the License Agreements through my company. Never heard of that being an issue....

I almost forgot, check your device manager in control panel / hardware.. See if vpn has an adapter listed under network. (I'm not looking at it right now so I might be calling it something else, but you get the jist)

What do you have for connections if local area and 1394 isn't there? How many do you have?

Under Network and Dial-UP Connections I have:
Make a New Connection
KTAGroupVPN
Dial-up Connection
Dial-up Connection 2

I can't believe I ever deleted the Local Area Connection or 1394

Windows does not have a EULA that expires. Once you buy Windows you are good to go until Microsoft kills that OS.

Honestly it sounds like the network card is not set up correctly. If you look in the Device manager is it showing as enabled with no conflicts?

That did it. I got rid of all of the connections. Then checked what it said on the status of my card and it showed it as unable to start. I restarted the computer and the Local Area Connection had re-established itself. Voila - the internets. Now I just need to get rid of all the porn on this thing and I can let my girlfriend have it. Thanks guys I'll cover your jump ticket sometime.

Windows does not have a EULA that expires.

Windows sent out an update bullitin saying they would no longer have updates, or offer any additional support for certain Windows platforms. I could be wrong about the EULA agreements. I'm not going to debate the issue.

EULAs are a somewhat legally shakey license agreement. I think you might be confusing them with product activation / genuine advantage. As for updates/patches it can be expected that all products reach EOL at some point.

With the way you pull these 'facts' outa your arse can I presume you are a MCSE? :P*

I wish some products would go EOL at some point. For gods sake Netware is still supported and its on the scope to be user supported though 2014 :(:D

I'm not an MCSE but I work with a bunch of idiots that are one! :D I'll take a CCNA over an MCSE just about any day of the week. Only thing worse then an MCSE is an MCAS. I'll give A+ some credit only since they keep adding more and more to the test.

Hey leave off Novell, one of my 1st certs;)

Because I worked for a MS shop that did the whole training cert side I got free stuff and it was good for marketing. I did the A+ stuff to progress from helpdesk, then the Net+ /Linux+ which actually taught you something rather than the point and click MS world.

CompTIA rock!:)
