LOL nah, some guy I work with - loves to put people down and make them look like shit in front of others....

One of my best axioms for work is that
you "praise in public and criticize in private".

If people really want others to learn, they present it
in a comfortable manner. Explaining something in a
quiet place, in a calm way, is received better.

People who put people down in public are looking for
control or attention.
Attention - think the 3rd grader who pulls the pigtails
of the girl in the seat ahead.
Control - seeking out people with low self-esteem and
promoting themselves as the person who assigns value.

Solution? Whenever they make a remark, just ignore
them, turn to someone else and continue as if you
weren't listening.
If someone mentions it later, just respond that their
opinion doesn't concern you because you don't
really value anything that the person says.
Others will see the truth in that.

If a person acts like that consistently, then they have
identified themselves as a person that I don't need
to be around. Contact can be minimal, but polite.

That is one of the basic, and best, principles of effective leadership in a nutshell. I try to adhere to it, especially when dealing with subordinates. The only time you criticize in public is when dealing with rebellious or malicious behavior, not much of a problem in my line of work.

The put down is a sign of bullying as much as anything. It's not that effective of a tool in the workplace. I think your approach to it works well.

Self loathing and pent up rage.

I think one of the saddest things the internet has shown us is how VERY ANGRY many people are. Look at the posts in response to just about any YouTube video. There's always someone who has to put it down. And then someone else who has to put them down. And then there's a lot of pointless bickering, and then the death threats begin. :|

People in IT are the biggest prima donnas in the world.
They tend to confuse "work" with "life". Their status
at work is the measurement of their self.
Challenge their opinion and you challenge their ego.

In meetings, I usually ask for opinions on how something should be done.
Then, whoever thinks that they have the best method, I let them have it.
Later, I send out a group-email praising them for a job well done.

I also coach a lot of people. I assign them new types
of work and then allow them to fail (kind of).
Many times, I review their work without their knowing it.
If there is a problem, I say, "I happened to notice..."
and ask them to review it.
Instead of anger, I get a, "Hey, thanks for catching that".

If people are just publicly being jerks, I ignore them.
Other people can figure out things for themselves.

No matter what business you are in, people will go the
extra mile for a person who has their back.

Maybe they are telling the truth and the target is too arrogant to see it for what it is. Sometimes truth hurts.

+2 This says it well....most people cant take blunt truth.....boldness and facts may seem rude when pointed in your direction but it may just be the honest truth or just someones opinion. The real question here is why would you let somone you dont likes opinion bother you?

Some people refrain from beating a dead horse. Personally, I find a myriad of entertainment value when beating it until it becomes a horse-smoothie.

Any chance of a link to specific threads? The one I browsed looked pretty civilised. What's the main source of disagreement - is it gear rivalry?

Thank God Apple and Microsoft will never get into the BASE or skydiving markets. :)

I work at the docks

All the time or just when the fleet comes in?

coffee all over the monitor! Bwahhh

G...I stand in the fire all the time and things (not so nice) are said.
Most of the time its a matter of considering the source, and realizing that the person saying those things 1) Doesn't have all the information 2) Doesn't know me and 3) Probably has never spoken with me.
Still I accept their perception as their reality.
All we really can do is check our motives when making decisions and then go doing the next right thing.
People can disagree without being disagreeable.

If someone thinks I am not being nice maybe it's because they are being a complete twatwaffleB| LOL

Now about that fatal attraction stuff...bwahhhhhhhh
