Do you "get" Twitter?

Recommended Posts

I know the site, I know what it is and I know it's all the rage...but I just don't get it. Why would I want to know what you're doing every few minutes? I don't want to know what I'm doing every few minutes!

Someone who is into it, please enlighten me.

The people I'm following tend to tweet things other than "taking the dog for a walk" or "drinking coffee." So far I've found it to be very useful as a news feed (both for local and national news), as a "check out this weird shit on the interweb" feed, and as a place to get a few laughs.

Kinda like Bonfire used to be, back when it was Talkback, but even better cuz I get to pick which people's noise I hear and I can stop following them if they become bothersome or boring. ;)

It's the ultimate egomaniacal vehicle. That about sums it up.

Having said that, I think there are ideas behind it that are interesting, but I'm not into it...;)
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

I have it. The only alert I get is from my DZ. It is torture to know the skies are clear and the winds are perfect, the Skyvan's on a 20 minute call and there's tons of people out there when I'm sitting in my office dreaming of being there with my friends!!

I wouldn't say I'm "into it," but I certainly understand it.

At the very lowest level, it's a way to communicate EXACTLY the same information you might in a text, but rather than sending it out to just one person, you can send it to many. So, it's more like a text party than a simple text conversation only between two people.

At a MUCH higher level (like celebs and politicians), it allows them to directly communicate with thousands of people instantly without any filter or cost (other than paying their publicists that usually actually do it).

By using URL shorteners, they can easily, for instance, say something like, "Had an amazing thing happen to me today. Read about it here at is.gd/lkjhs"

Really an amazing tool for those people.

As far as monetization goes . . . well, you have me there. Not even Biz Stone really has a clue how he's ever going to make a profit from it, but he figures the service is valuable enough eventually it will find a way and his investors are letting him.

I'm on it, but I'm probably not the normal user. I don't tweet (post) all that much, certainly not everything I do every minute. When I do it's usually something I find interesting, useful, or funny - in other words when I do post it's more like a micro-blog than just a "what am i doing."

Most of the people I follow are strippers and porno actresses - and it's quite funny to watch them interact with each other - and the occasional (ok, more than occasional) boobies link is fun. Truly its the entertainment from this that is the only reason I stuck with it. The 140 character limit means that the incoming messages - even as a pop-up box on my computer - both satisfy my ADHD need for distraction and are short enough to not derail me from what I'm working on at the present moment.

It can quickly be overwhelming and trying to keep up with every incoming message is a certain path to time-wasting doom. I often ignore the pop-ups for long periods of time (they auto dismiss), and when I do "get back" to it I don't try to read everything I missed. I read a few current one, and move on.
It wouldn't hurt you to think like a fucking serial killer every once in a while - just for the sake of prevention

Rumor has it that Jennifer Anniston broke up with John Mayer because he was spending too much time on Twitter. Who knows if it is true or not, but if it is...what an idiot he is. He had Jennifer Anniston!

That sounds pretty masochistic to me. I'm sure there are some guys here who would love to help you explore that part of your personality. ;)

I'm sure I speak for all of your stalkers when I say we really would like to know where you are, and what you are doing, every minute.

I use Twitter to follow a few traders and analysts - it's nice being alerted as news breaks or daily analysis are published.

Twitterfox is a nice little addon for Firefox, so I get the alerts as long as my browser is open :)

A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!
