In my thinking the cost of the room is irrelevant. The men initially gave the clerk $30. They paid $27 for the room. The bellboy has $2. There is a missing $1.

the problem is that there is no reason to add 27 and 2. forget about that because it isn't relevant. there are $30 that we have to account for and we can easily do so. $25 are sitting in the till, $2 and in the bellboy's pocket, and $3 have been returned to the customer. 25+2+3=30. no missing dollar.

No, there is not. Your thinking is wrong. The question is lying to you.
The men part company with $30. The hotel ends up with $25. The bellboy ends up with $2. The men end up with $3.
25+2+3 = 30.

Another way of saying this is each man paid $9 which includes the tip for the bellboy. Thus:
$30 - $3=$27.
$30 - $3=$27.

Ah ha ha!! Hope your second calculation was a typo
It's just that the people *think* they each paid $9 because they only got $1 back.. But what they don't realise is that they didn't get the full refund and that the rooms didn't cost $27, but in fact $25.
Put simply,
25 + 3 = $28
28 + 2 = $30

On the contrary... It is not at all simple for someone who is bad at math. This is an excellent example of different learning styles.

i was on a job once where a guy insisted that it was a math anomily and that mathematics was full of them. because of this he discounted all of science. i spent a couple of hours trying to explain this to him. i even made 30 fake dollar bills and got some co workers to play the part of the customers, bellboy, and clerk. when it was all done he could physically see where all of the dollars were. he still wasn't wouldn't believe me.

It's not even a question of maths, it's a question of fundamental logic vs gullibility.
Think about the question. Why should the combined cost of the hotel room and the tip have to reach $30 when you've already given part of that $30 away? You don't even need to use arithmetic to figure out that the question doesn't make sense - it's nonsensical at first glance.
