Canopy size & opening speed correlation?

Recommended Posts

Was wondering if there's any correlation between the size of a canopy and how fast it opens?

I'm currently on student status and normally jump 288 mains. A couple of my jumps I've jumped with 210's and noticed those openings felt a bit harder.

Do smaller canopies tend to open faster (and thus harder)?

Just curious.... thanks all

it's not that simple. Other things to consider: canopy platform, number of cells, line type, line trim, PC size, D-bad size, and many-many more. With that in mind, in general, small rectangular 9 cell ZP canopies (like sabre1) opens harder then bigger ones.

There have been a number of good threads on this topic in the BASE Jumping forum. Generally speaking if all other things are equal the smaller canopy will open faster because there is less canopy that needs to inflate.
